Someone at work asked me this week what stuff is cheaper in the NZ

I've been racking my brain and here's my list:

Petrol
Car Insurance
Takeaway Pizza's
Fish and Chips
Parking
Cinema

Anything else?

Guess it depends on where you came from originally. Cinema tickets and parking are way more expensive where I am than they were where I lived in the UK.

Beer should be about half the price of what they charge, if that happened I'd be happy.

Why is it so expensive? Anyone know?

Simple, lack of competition.

Bit like the Supermarkets then as they must be at least 100% over charging.

I don't mind eating less but drinking less is tough.

not sure f&c or takeaway pizzas are cheaper in NZ.
Petrol yes, but compared to salaries, maybe not.
Car insurance, yes. Cinema, probably yes.

Surely no-one is still immigrating to crap old NZ cos its cheaper?

Ha ha - takeaway pizza is way cheaper if you use vouchers

Fruit and veges in season are better value, not always cheaper and the supermarkets are a dirty great Cartel - otherwise how would they be able to employ 2 or 3 times the staff that UK operators do?

Out of season veges can be extortionate. And that doesn't take into account that you'll probably be taking home half the salary you were in the UK (well maybe not that bad if the pound keeps falling through the floor)

Some electrical goods are cheaper as the NZ dollar is strong at times but it's often like buying a new car was in the 80s, get your bartering head on....

Lots of market niches hardly exist in NZ, like kids shoes that are fitted to width and proper size (no-one cares apart from Pomms and some SAers), middle market clothing (Next, Gap, M&S, etc) doesn't really cover the whole spectrum with a few small chains and the odd bit of Farmers (read Debenhams on a bad day, with added toy department) covering that ground. But even so getting good quality mid-priced clothing is a mission, no competition and so we get poor quality.
The cost of opthalmic services is coming down as competition starts to bite, but dentistry without any NHS-like subsidy is gratuitously expensive.
