Re: Smokey Air
Bev's I remember about 22 years, oh 23 years ago riding my bike through Pokesdown, on the way to Bournemouth. The smoke in the streets then wasn't like it is here in winter, but I recall as a 19 year old youth, that the blue smoke in the street was what I was breathing. I think at the time most of that was from cars and buses as I can only recall a few people who actually burned coal in the fireplace - Mr. and Mrs. Colgate.
However, I am surprised tonight I don't see too much smoke in the air.
Now, to the topic. The New Zealand government has been dealing with its environmental legislation lately. Since the Ecan website says that only 3% of air polution (PM10) comes from cars and 7% from industry while 90% comes from home heating, should we not be concentrating on the source with the largest possibility of improvement? I think quite often those in government loose sight of the fact that there is more to it than just being seen to be doing something. To do something is often better. Anyway, doing something would expose the truth that NZer's don't seem to realize. New Zealand is suffering from a long term energy crisis that is only going to get worse as the population growth continues apace while growth in electricity production does not quite keep up. Lower energy prices, if achievable through alternate generation technologies could help keep jobs in the country.

Well they do say NZ is like Britain 30 years ago, perhaps they actually mean 50!
