Default Skilled Migrants are raking it in

I've just posted this on the Ozzie board and am putting it here too because some people may find it interesting. Makes you wonder why people often accept lower wages to buy into the 'NZ lifestyle' when they can hop across the ditch and experience the same - if not better, on temp visas.

Skilled migrant workers in Australia are said to be earning $15,000 more on average than their Ozzie counterparts according to a report in today's "Australian".

The 457 Visa was introduced by the Howard government to provide skilled workers to the IT and mining industries, but now it seems that all sectors of the employment market are employing temporary migrants and paying more than an Ozzie would get in the same job.

Here's the link
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...23-601,00.html

Add to that the tax breaks that temp visa holders can access and it's not hard to see why Australia's economy has done so well.

Not sure why you felt the need to post it twice, but as I commented in your other thread - I'm sure many 457 nholders would take great issue with the fact that they are percieved to be "raking it in."

Because I wanted to highlight the different perceptions of skilled migrants in the two countries, some may find the contrast questionable or agree with it.

Usually it is incredbily difficult to find out what work colleagues are being paid so the report could be true but no one knows it, or is it just a case of statistics being used again to fulfil an agenda.

There is a broader implication being made in the report that the higher pay skilled migrants attract is in part responsible for inflation in Australia - if that is true will changes in immigration policy be made to correct it? That may have a bearing on any decision people in NZ may be making about working in Australia in the future.

Interesting post.

Its fair to say Australia's immigration policy has been working better than NZs in the last couple of years - maybe the new visas are one factor (although better comparability of wages with UKs is probably the biggest drawcard)

Without the 457 visa we would not have made the jump across the ditch so easily or so quickly. We would have also looked at going elsewhere in the world or even returning to the UK for a short time. (Sticking it out in NZ just to obtain a passport of convenience was a non-starter )

The Ozzie immigration policy has been working better. Temp visas in New Zealand are relatively more difficult to obtain, are shorter, more expensive and are overly prescriptive compared to the 457.

Of the Ozzie migrants I know, those on temp visas are significantly worse off than those on permanent ones. A lot of employers seem to take advantage of the temp status to pay lower wages.

Yep, that's what we've always been told too.

I could understand it perhaps if the higher pay was only in the boom sectors such as mining, but the report seems to suggest it's wider spread than that.

Skilled migrants, like skilled non-migrants, will I'm sure be earning more than the average wage. Its easy coming from the Uk to naturally think that migrants will take the lower paying jobs, but it obviously is not like this in some places. Thats why the term brain drain has been coined.

In OZ if you are on a temporary visa don't you have to pay for schooling for children and are not eligible for any benefits etc?

Varies from State to State, and can also depend on which temp visa.
Some States charge horrendous school fees for temp visa holders. As for benefits, you are far more restricted as to what you can get, eg a UK citizen on a temp visa needs helath insurance as the entitlements under Medicare are very limited in that situation.

as an example, we have friends one a UK citizen, other a US citizen with kids having dual nationality. They are in Oz and have no intention of bothering with PR or citizenship (both being professionals with a great deal of experience in a very sought after field within the oil industry - so no problem there if they chose to go for it!) ...... as they pay less tax if they don't...........compare and contrast with the (apparent) majority of skilled people who enter NZ on WTR/PR plus those who and make sure that they get PR if they can.
Suppose that the tax break has some effect there.......

We're of the same mind - no intention of going for PR as the Living Away From Home Tax Allowance tax break is just worth too much. QLD doesn't charge temp visa holders for state school fees (not that that affects us anyway) our private health insurance is subsidised through OH's employer and we have limited cover with Medicare under free reciprocal health arrangements with NZ/UK

I think I know why this article was so biased now - it was to undermine a report has just come out stating that the federal government is going to speed up the processing of controversial 457 work visas. The proposals will allow accredited companies to gain rapid results on work visa requests. The NSW Health service is likely to be one of the accredited companies along with large mining companies.

An advisory group has been asked to look at speedier schemes and is expected to report back to government next month.

457s are vastly unpopular with trades unions.

I can understand that - tax breaks for immigrant workers is a bit unusual, especially when their local workmates don't get the same.
