single parent seeking advice on Christchurch area
Hi
I am a widowed mother. The youngest is 14 so childcare is not really an issue. I currently work as a teacher. My college is unusual because we do both the traditional A level stuff, and also do degrees. So my CV is pretty wide. I hope this will helpful getting a job in NZ.
We are coming to Christchurch at Easter to have a poke around with a view to emigrating. I would appreciate advice on the lines of :-
1....What would you have looked into more closely before moving- this will help me to look in the right direction!
2.....Can a family survive on one income- i did the cost of living thing on one of the immigration websites and the outcome was pretty discouraging. If we make it over, the 14 yr old will be with me but the older one might stay on and do a degree in the UK. So there could be two or three of us.
3....If there are any teachers working in this region - I would appreciate any inside information, do's and dont's you might be able to offer. I found a thread on primary teaching but not one on FE or HE.
4.....I have only been able to research via the internet, but it all seems too good to be true- fab weather, reasonable property prices, good facilities, loads of senior schools and two universities. So why is the whole world not living there?
Thanks

We only researched via the internet before coming. I wish I had quoted you so I could see your points as I respond.
For living on one income, that is entirely dependent on your pre-existing capital. We manage on one income, but it is well above the average. We likely could be more careful with our money, but we do manage. Housing is very expensive and I think that is the most disappointing aspect of the move. You can read elsewhere about the housing.
Christchurch does provide a variety of housing options throuigh its suburbs with something for most budgets.
I cannot answer you other questions specific to your line of work.
