SIM Card Advice

Hi there
I wonder if any of you could give me some advice - I am about to move to NZ in early December and I have obtained my unlocking code number for my mobile from my service provider here.
I am unsure what I do now - do I take the current SIM card out here, buy a new one here in the UK and put it in and unlock it? Or do I wait until I get to NZ and take the current SIM card out and buy a new one there and put the unlocking code in there? Can anyone help?:)

Hi, Not really a technical/ mobile phone expert but when I took my UK mobile to NZ it was unlocked, I bought a NZ sim there and just swapped them over...so guess you unlock with UK sim in then when in NZ buy new sim and swap...away you go!

Hopefully, an 'expert' will be along to confirm or put you right!!

You can unlock whenever you like - once it's done, it's done and there is no "downside"
I would unlockk while you're still in UK, to make sure it works (by borrowing a different network SIM from someone).
Then when you get to NZ, get your 2 Degrees SIM and you're sorted

Have a look at this company, I like them but I like to talk on the phone, if you prefer to send texts you may prefer another company like vodafone.

I agree with lapsedkiwi here. Unlock your phone before you leave the uk and test it to make sure it will accept a different sim, that way you can contact yr service provider easier in the uk if anything goes wrong and it doesnt unlock.

Ive bought myself and my kids an international sim card (ekit) specifically for aussie and nz. This way we get a uk number which makes it easier and cheaper for peeps in the uk to contact us and its cheap to call home too. We can think about changing to a nz sim at a later stage. I got mine cheap on ebay, heres the link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Hope this helps

2degrees Mobile is offering the best pre pay plan and the best deal with a simcard basically Free and available practically anywhere (ie petrol stations, supermarkets and corner shops, even a mate might have one spare ;))

Vodafone do sim cards but your paying $29.95 on average.

Telecom has a new XT Network also does sim cards for $29.95, however you may find that your handset if not compatible with the new XT network.

Overall Telecom has the best coverage in New Zealand especially outside the havily built up areas, with 2degrees using the Vodafone network.

Pop out your old simcard and pop in the new thats all you need to do if the handset is unlocked.

Thanks everyone for your kind advice gratefully received. I've got my head round it now - so much to think about making this move (back home for me, but still - after 10 years in the UK and toting a husband and two children with me, it's quite something!).

Vamps - thanks for the link. I notice that you are arriving in NZ December 12th - we arrive December 11th. Are you as nervous/excited/butterflies and unable to turn your brain off for one moment as we are?!!
