Default Sight seeing in Welly suggestions please

2nd February we will be receiving our very first UK guests - they are on a cruise and happen to be dropping into Welly for the day.

They have asked me to show them around but they have limited mobility and I am stuck for ideas.

To include in our trip is Papakowhai to check out our house, and Petone for a couple specialists shops (no, not Peaches and Cream )

I had thought about Te Papa museum (I love it there) - that could kill a few hours.

Are there any sight seeing places in Welly that i can drive right up to?

Would appreciate any ideas of where I could take them! Cheers, Kate.

Brooklyn Wind turbine, the views are breathtaking and you can see for far greater distances than from Mt Vic

We've just been introduced to some lovely people who live up at the top of Plimmerton. The views are amazing from there. Just go right at the wee roundabout in Plimmerton, rather than left for the beach and follow the road up, up, up. Fantastic!! Not much else up there but the VIEW!!

And apparently, the stingrays come right up to the shore on the furthest beach at Plimmerton at sunset - never seen them myself but that's the story. We spent a lovely evening there about this time last year with Danny and Donna and their kids: fish and chips and a box of wine - excellent!!

My 8 year old says, if they can't walk very far, why not take them around everywhere in the car!!! Helpful soul.
I'm just trying to think.....apart from driving round to show them the Town Hall, the Beehive, Lambton Quay, Cuba Street, Thorndon etc.......you could drive round the coast road of the Miramar peninsula so they get an impression of Wellington as having lots of beaches. If it's a nice day I suppose a cafe at Queens Wharf or Oriental Bay would also give a good impression.

There is now a new viewing platform up Mount Victoria but I agree the Brooklyn one is easier to access....the viewing point at the Botanic Gardens is also easy to access from the top by car in Kelburn or they could take the cable car up or down.

Te Papa would be the obvious one with lifts etc and 2 cafes especially for a rainy day.
There's also Wellington Museum of City and Sea on Queens Wharf but I haven't done this one yet.

There must be more - I think you can get cars close to most places if you are just dropping people off. Bella Italia is a good cafe to take people to in Petone but you probably know that already.

SH2 across the rimutakas, nice(ish) coffee shop at the top of the summit and a nice drive and scenery generally.

Chocolate fish cafe?

Days Bay / Eastbourne - one of you drive them around (or get the bus?) then catch the ferry back over after lunch in a cafe there. Actually they might not want to get to Wellington on a cruise ship, only to get back on another boat...

Actually I think I like Simon's idea of the Brooklyn Wind Turbine. We've not been up there yet, but that area sure is amazing for views!

I spoke to the owner at my last visit and it was a combination of local tax issues/roadside seating byelaws and the fact that the landlord wanted to put the rent up massively so that he could set his son up on the premises instead. This landlord was found dead in his garden (natural causes) just before Christmas and I have heard nothing more since.

There's also a cafe run by the same people inside the garden centre in Miramar called Chocolate Frog but you don't get the views.
