Shopping for clothes in Christchurch?and
Hello to all,
Anyone on the ground in Chch who can recommend new arrivals on where to shop for mens/womens/childrens clothing?
It's been a while since we've been in the UK but we miss reasonably priced "mid-range" shops we used to frequent in London such as Uniqlo, Massimo Dutti, Burton/Dorothy Perkins and of course Marks & Spencer. Some are better than others, obviously but we don't want brand-name fashion labels, just decent quality and reasonable style for parents in their late 30s with children...
And what about cheaper options for inexpensive things like socks, t-shirts, etc., such as the NZ equivalent of Zara or Primark or Debenhams....
Thanks!

For cheaper stuff, can't beat Kmart!
Glassons http://www.glassons.com/ , Hallensteins http://www.hallensteins.com/?gclid=C...FeRfpgod1XMAcw sell a range of clothes - can be quite young but not too bad. Meccano http://www.meccano.co.nz/ a mens shop that sells fairly good quality and JacquiE http://www.jacquie.com.au/shop/en/jacquie are ones that spring to mind.

Rebelsport for decent hoodies and sports clothing
Kathmandu and Macpac for outdoor clothing (make sure you only go when there is a sale)
Farmers is NZ's answer for a department store, kids clothes are OK if you have kids under 10. Useless for men and women, unless you want to dress like grand parents.

All good tips, thanks! Darling wife will probably like Glassons and JaquiE
Meccano and Hallensteins seem too young for me...I should mention I'm the type who wears boring old khaki/chinos and a nice quality shirt during the week (with or without a blazer) during the week to work, and jeans and polo shirts on weekends... :-)
I may not look like a grandfather, but I believe in 'classic' style that never goes out of fashion.....
Our toddler is just under 2 years old, we probably won't have a problem shopping anywhere...
Online shopping is great but only once we get a feel for the local market and what our money can buy in NZ.

Cottonon I would include in this
If you want primark prices, then only warehouse and k-mart would offer that.
There is a Laura Ashley in Riccarton Mall as well. Save the dollars mind if you want to shop there

Save your pennies coz clothes are not cheap....and when they are cheap....they really are cheap..
I have found that Glassons, Jay Jays, Cotton On, Factories = all fashion stores are expensive unless you buy in the sale....but the quality is not very good...
Op Shops are my choice, quality 2nd hand clothing that doesn't fall apart & costs you less....so if its does fall apart you have not paid a fortune for it...I often pick up some good M&S, Next & Top Shop bargains...from the local Salvation Army Store.
However I don't buy undies at the Sallies......I buy those from Farmers or the Warehouse...Bonds are the best I have found for the family...

You're better off buying clothes from overseas, you'll save a bloody fortune even with postage on top.

on a similar topic - hubby and I are due to arrive next month and he is going to need work boots (he's in Construction). Toying with buying them here and transporting over but with the excess baggage costs and the weight of said boots, may be cheaper to wait and get them out there. Does anyone know rough costs/availability for these sort of things?

He can always wear them if you buy them in the UK

They are touted as work boots you can run in and in my opinion are extremely good.
Disclaimer - I do not work for this company or get paid by them.

Dressmart in Hornby has a good range of clothing and shoe stores. Its an end of season/end of line type place for most of the main retailers. I'm a fan of the sports stores there such as Puma, or Barkers for business shirts. I do find sometimes that sales in the main malls can end up cheaper so know your prices before hand. Its on Main South Road opposite the Hornby Mall.
