That actually happened to us . We hadn't given it a thought and were completely caught out by the Easter closures and surcharges the first year.

We realised too during our first year in 2012. It was one of those huh moments.... At least we know now.

But isn't it great, forcing closures on public holidays. No shops open on two days, extra charges for anyone wanting to go out during those public holidays - ooooh it's so great isn't it? One of 1,495,982 things and rising about how unbelievably magnificent this country is Even the people with their entertainment cards and vouchers can't use them during the holiday period - magnificent New Zealand.

Where's the usual speed limit threats from the coppers??? I've not heard anything ont radio, tele or read int paper about the long holiday road presence. This is a first

Lo and behold the first thing I heard in the radio is that Kings Plant Barn are sticking with their Easter tradition and flouting the law of forced closure over the weekend, in favour of paying the fine as they have done since 1972.

So all is not lost you can at least be assured petunias and begonias will be available this weekend and if you're stuck for some veg you might be able to get some lettuce and herbs to have with the bbq'd beer.

It used to be the same in the UK. There's no real reason for NZ to still be doing it too.

If anyone gives the excuse "its a Christian nation" as they did here, then I'd laugh in their face

Bread and milk stripped at countdown, although lamb legs were $9.50 a kg.

Entertainment books vouchers/cards from Christchurch, Canterbury and Nelson are valid everyday but not valid Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Fine this weekend, double checked the website, Auckland and Wellington are out of luck.

ha ha. Blame your Pakeha forefathers folks. See the evolution of public holidays in NZ below.

Nowadays basically, the widely accepted reason the shops still close on Good Friday, Easter Sunday.. and Christmas Day, is to allow retail trade workers paid leave to spend these traditional public holidays with the rest of their families. The last long break before winter sets in here in the Southern hemisphere.

Dairies are open for essentials.

MrH and I chortled a lot when we were told by a rather mystified tourist guide in the Info office that real estate agents never opened at weekends. It was like that when we moved to our current home twenty years ago, all house hunting had to be done during leave days from work. Thankfully it's changed and they're now open on Saturdays.

I remember the buzz when DIY stores opened over Easter for the first time in the UK...... 30 years ago!

Every year . Do we just spend all of our free time eating or do people genuinely only have a 24 hour food supply?

Personally I think it's is great that everything is forced to close and I think it sould be the same in the uk. There are far to many family's not able to spend quality time together as people are forced to go out to work because people want everything open 24 hours a day 365 days a year

Nonsense! That's what holiday time is for and nobody works 365 24/7.
