shipping without PR
Hi,
with regards to shipping, am I right in thinking that if you have PR then no problem. If you have gone over on a 6 month visitor while ITA has been lodged with the hope that PR will be granted before the plane tickets back home then is your stuff kept somewhere and you can't have it until PR? Or can you have it sent to family in NZ and pay tax??__________________

http://new-zealand.shipping-international.com/customs/...... looks like there may be a bond charged until PR gained.

Re: shipping without PR
The customs declaration and import paperwork we completed asked about immigration status....I'm sure I've read a previous post / thread on here where someone tried to ship contents of house without PR and got a big tax bill....luckily I think they got PR while there and managed to avoid paying it .....but maybe I just dreamt this one up!! will do a search

Re: shipping without PR
we were on a 9 month temp WTR visa whilst waiting to fullfil the criteria for PR. We needed to show our visas and when customs saw that the visa was a temp one we were told we had to list everything that we had bought outside NZ (duh, everything) and the cost and how much use it had had so that customs could decide how much import tax we would need to pay.
We then had to jump through several hoops to prove that we were just about to meet all the requirements for PR and that were going to get PR visas shortly otherwise we would have had to pay some sort of tax on our goods.
I'm sure I did a thread about it at the time.....I'm about to go to work so don't have time to search now, but someone posted a good link about import taxes and stuff. If you're on a 6 month visitors visa I'm sure you'd have to pay some sort of import tax.

Don't guess:
NZ Customs website
"When no Customs charges apply
Eligibility
Your household or other related effects (excluding motor vehicles, boats and aircraft) will qualify for concessionary entry, ie be free of duty and exempt GST, for a reasonable time after you arrive in New Zealand, provided you can meet all of the following conditions.
Conditions
* You have arrived and on the date the effects are imported, hold a document authorising residence in New Zealand; and
* You have resided or lived outside New Zealand for the whole of the 21 months before the date of your arrival in New Zealand; and
* You have owned and used the goods before the date of your departure for New Zealand; and
* The goods are for your own personal use and not intended for any other person or persons or for gift, sale or exchange.
The following goods will not qualify for duty free entry, unless you can establish that the items have had personal use by you prior to their arrival in New Zealand:
* Goods shipped directly after purchase to avoid local taxes in the country of export
* Replacement electrical equipment operating to New Zealand standards.
Goods of a commercial nature (such as factory plant and office equipment) do not qualify as household effects.
Document authorising residence in New Zealand –
means any of the following:
* A current New Zealand Passport
* A current Australian Passport
* A current New Zealand Residence visa or permit or a current New Zealand returning resident's visa or permit
* A current permanent residence visa (including a resident return visa) issued by the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia
* A current New Zealand work visa or work permit that was issued for a minimum of twelve months
* A current New Zealand work visa or work permit issued under the Work to Residence (Skilled Migrant Category) policy or the Long term Business Visa/Permit category
* A current New Zealand visitor's visa or permit that was issued for a minimum of three years."
So you need a work permit for a minimum of 12mths to get concessionary entry with no charges on household goods. Visitors permit needs to be for 3yrs.
I would suggest you arrange to store the goods in a bonded storage until you fulfil the concessionary criteria....unless they calculate the tax to be worth paying for quick release of the effects....your call.

Re: shipping without PR
When we came to NZ in Aug 2008 we didn't have PR until 18 months later and had no problem shipping out all our belongings. It is a gamble not knowing if you will get PR or not but for us it paid off.

Re: shipping without PR
as the above poster has listed it does depend on the visa if you have WTR for 2 years you are fine same as PR but several expats have been stung shipping stuff while on temp visa, customs do look at your passports including when you ship pets and take copies of visas, goods are not released without it!
