Smile Shipping outdoor items????

Hi, I am moving to Dunedin from the UK in September and am currently arranging shipping. Has anyone had any problems with getting patio furnature or a trampolene into NZ. I want to know if it's worth shipping these items or will I end up paying more for decontamination. Any advise greatfully recieved.

Hi Theresa,

Outdoor items have to be declared for import into NZ, declared items may be inspected at the discretion of MAF Biosecurity, if they choose to inspect them then you will be charged locally. Current advise is that this can cost nz$470-$520 for a 20' container or nz$550-$620 for a 40' container. This EXCLUDES any charges for fumigation or cleaning if the items are found to need it so any items you do send will require thorough cleaning to remove all traces of dirt.

This guide from the Biosecurity department is quite useful.
http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files...ed-to-know.pdf

Hope that helps?

As long as it is perfectly clean and treated with something like Virkon S and declared as such then all garden, sports, outside stuff will fall into the same category. A trampoline will attract as much attention as a tent, garden spade, fishing rod or walking boots. New forms compiled by MAF and NZ customs will ask you to list all of the bio security items and what treatments you subjected them to prior to shipping. Make a thorough inventory of everything 'iffy' and keep that for when the shippers NZ end present you with a heap of forms to be completed.
MAF gave the shippers permission to street unload our container providing we had a safe quarantine area for them to use. They then decided they didn't want to inspect anything and Customs followed suit.
I just finished reassembling our garden furniture yesterday...

Jeyes fluid - I hope never to use that stuff ever again! We packed our patio furniture, parasol, parasol base, mountian bikes, wooden chest, 50+pairs of used shoes, tools, xmas decs, tents, motorbikes, motorbike used spares. All scrubbed to death with Jeyes for weeks, but customs only picked out the xmas decs and my motorbikes (which didn't need any extra cleaning) I think we got lucky!

Scrub it as has been suggested and bring it all on in if you have room in your container. Bring as much 'stuff' as you can.

Bring lots of trainers if you wear them - decent pair of new balance or asics may set you back $200 - $300.

My advice would be to leave it behind. It is not worth the hassel. We moved here 8 months ago from the US and basically sold EVERYTHING. It felt wonderful. When we arrived we were able to travel around a bit to see NZ and didn't have to worry about our "stuff" After talking to many immigrants that was the one thing that we all shared in common. Everyone said that they wished they had brought less "stuff".

How many people? Generally reading around traps, being on this forum and being around expats for many years the mantra is alway 'bring as much stuff as you can'. I honestly never heard anyone say they brought too much stuff.

Nothing better than to bring all your own "stuff" especially if you have kids, it's like 4 Christmases in 1 & helps them settle!!
With the crap quality & high prices of things here, I would hate to start from scratch.
For the sake of 3 or 4k shipping costs I fail see where the hassle is, it was easier than our last move in the UK & that was only 2 miles.

I'd say bring it with you if you have a big enough container.
We brought the majority of our outdoor stuff, garden tools, outdoor sports equipment, golf clubs, bikes etc. Only thing I left was the lawnmower as it was too hard to clean and caked in mud and grass and the patio furniture as it was old.
Spent a day scrubbing everything with hot soapy water then disinfecting with the Jays fluid. Man that stuff stinks and knocks you sick!!!
If you do it right there's no problem when you get to this end.
Yes MAF will want to look at things to inspect them and you will pay locally for this.
If you are going to bring outdoor gear try to have it all packed together in as fewer packages as possible as this will reduce the MAF inspection costs as they calculate it on number of packages to inspect...We had 25 and they charged us over $400!!!
Still glad we brought all our own stuff though so we didnt have to go out and buy here. New stuff is expensive but you can get everything used off TradeMe.
Good luck.

Have to agree with this. Been around expats & expat forums etc for 10 years now. The collective thought always seems to be to bring as much 'stuff' as you can . Maybe even buy stuff to bring more 'stuff' & get enough 'stuff' to pack the container to the gunnels.

I've heard of people who have regretted not bringing some of their stuff but not the other way around.

Bring your outdoor items. Just scrub with Jeyes & make a list of what MAF might need or wish to see. It's not that much effort really and worth it.
We really regret not bringing our quality tent and a cycle we had. We also didn't bring an outdoor table and 4 chairs . Even now I really wish we had. Not been able to get anything similar here that didn't cost the earth or was rubbish quality.

The lads packing the container make it really easy peasey so why not go for it for the sake of a rag and a bit of a clean.
