Default Shipping a motorcycle to NZ

Hi
Has anyone shipped a motorcycle to NZ from the UK? My girlfriend and I arrive in NZ on January 10th 20011. Lauren was lucky enough to get a Silver Fern visa. My bike will be a year old in March 20011. Any info on when/how/who to trust/avoid and pitfalls etc would be much appreciated. Is it possible to import a bike before residency is achieved? Also if anyone knows of any work agencies specializing in domestic violence, that would be a great help too. Lauren is an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate here in the UK. Many thanks. John

if you have owned the bike for more than 12 months there is no import tax to pay, when u get it here just take it to VTNZ and they will do the compliance and issue a number plate it,s all very straight forward

Brought mine over, dead easy.
Check prices before you get here though. You may find it financially advisable to sell there and buy here rather than pay the shipping costs.
You also need to be aware that you can't sell it when you get here, can't remember the rules, but there are some.
Head to kiwibiker.co.nz for better info.

Thanks for the information. As I bought my bike new in March 2010 and it will be over a year old when/if we get residency I won't have to pay GST it seems. I have looked at selling it here and buying one there but what I will lose here and the weakness of the pound, it seems best to ship. I will check out the website you mention. Thanks again and best regards, John

If you get the GST exemption then you can't sell it for two years otherwise they claim the GST from you. Same with cars and boats.

If you don't qualify for the GST exemption then you will pay GST at the time of import but are free to sell it whenever you like.

and check out compliance before you ship, if the documentation and standards aren't right it can be impossible to get legal. Only certain stations do compliance, not all VTNZ/AA centres do it.

Thanks for the info. My bike is totally standard but I think I will still need to get a document fom Triumph to state that it is so. I will certainly take note of your comments. Cheers, John

Yes, having travelled around both islands over a 6 month period I know what you mean. Still, every refuge has its price. I know where I would rather be right now, though, bike or no bike!

Couldn't get a certificate of compliance for the XJR. It just means it had to have a brake check prior to warrant and rego.
Certainly confused them as it's a 1995 1200 with a 2003 1300 engine in it,

The brake check is std for cars irrespective, when did you import the bike as the compliance for cars is getting more detailed as time goes on according to the inspector....
