Shipping insurance
I have chosen my removal company, but am stumped about how to choose my Insurance option. It's either create my own inventory and valuation, or accept the lumpsum option from the shippers. OK with me either way, but any item I value at more than £1000 should be separately mentioned. I own a piano whose worth at 'new-for-old' is £15,000. This would add around £450 to the overall insurance tally. Whether its their valuation or mine, it seems that that sort of figure needs to be added.
I could under-insure the piano, or not even mention it, but 'if the ship went down' is the overall sum insured paid out in one go (enabling me to choose how to replace items) or do I have to buy each item, then show the proof?
Hope someone understands this! Myrna

Re: Shipping insurance
sorry not sure how that works as didn't really have that option, with the shippers insurance we still had to list things over certain amounts. We went with Letton Percival, as have many other on here, you still have to fill in forms but they come out a lot cheaper than most removal firms

Re: Shipping insurance
I approached Letton Percival and the quote half the price of the shipping company and with much better cover.
Luckily just before I paid the premium, I mentioned it to my new soon to be manager here in NZ and my company placed the entire shipment on the company insurance for the grand sum of $0 :-)
Covered accidental damage, total loss, damage by damp, condensation, animals, insects, theft - everything and more.
Maybe worth asking your employer in NZ ???

Re: Shipping insurance
My understanding is that 'total loss cover' i.e. If the entire shipment is lost would pay out a lump sum on the total declared value enabling you to replace the items as you see fit.
However, be careful, if you under-insure and only part of the consignment is lost / damaged then it will be item specific and you will only be able to claim up to the declared value.

Thank-you, Kirsty. You worded it clearly enough for me to get my head around. Myrna

I too would like to sing the praises of Letton Percival. They were excellent and are dealing with a claim I have very professionally.
