Shipping Help
Hi all,
Firstly, thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer.
I have been offered a position in Takapuna, Auckland and will be moving over in mid to late January with my partner.
We are looking at whether it will be better use of our money to ship our stuff over (we only have 2 sofas, 2 beds, 2 bikes, TV and whatever clothes we cannot take with us) or to buy it all when we arrive. From a quick look it appears that not many rental properties come fully furnished.
Any advice or recommendations of companies that are reliable would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Peter

Re: Shipping Help
I believe the following:
The TV may not work as using a different system.
DAB may not work, if does then very few stations.
Vacuum cleaners are expensive.
All white goods are expensive.
Fully check what can be imported, items like rafia(?), dried flowers, shells and ANYTHING with a hint of external climate be it boots, camping equipment, lawn mowers will need to be totally and completely clean.
Socks and smalls seemed very expensive.
Take the sofa, beds and linen for sure.
Do not take anything that could be mistaken for new or you will be levied a tax.
Do not even consider wardrobes.
Hope this short answer helps.

Bring it all by part container. Beds are expensive, TV's will work via NZ Freeview box but UK Freeview boxes won't. I made the mistake of buying clothes and shoes to bring and have not worn much more than jandals and shorts 9 months of the year then Merino wool for the other 3. Good tops are useful on cold days.

As snaps says, for a room to be classed as a bedroom, they have to have a built in wardrobe, although some can be pretty small

Still think we'll bring most of ours, even if it means flat packing them..
As would need to be fairly impressive built-in capacity to compensate for Mrs NH's shoe collection

Most houses do have built in wardrobes here. It is the norm at least. The exception maybe being old villas

bring everything, wardrobes are good storage and not every bedroom has one, if not needed you can always sell on trademe! I also work in Takapuna you will love it very easy to commute to from most of the shore!

Argh! Vacuum cleaners.
Bring a good'un.
Mine in the UK lasted 20 years . I did not bring it coz we were advised not to.
The thing here lasted just over 5 years despite a fair amount of $$ on the thing. Complete rubbish and it has now virtually fallen apart.

Re: Shipping Help
Thanks for all the advice everyone. We have built in wardrobes here, so we will have to suck it and see when we get there.
I hadn't throughout about having to clean out the hoover... Better that and take our good one than suffer the pain from the sounds of things.
I think we are almost decided on shipping everything we can now, which will amount to a part container.
How expensive are second hand bikes (just run arounds not specific mountain or road ones) and are they relatively easy to obtain? we are considering not bringing ours as they are nothing special and will require the obligatory uber clean first...
