Default Shipping or buying new

Hi
just wondered what peoples opinions were on shipping ALL your stuff (lounge suite etc) or only taking things you wouldn't want to replace? like kitchen stuff which would cost me a large fortune to replace!!

Is it expensive to ship? do you pay by square metre?

how easy/cheap is it to replace things like lounge suites and beds etc?

I'd say as ball park figure around £4200for a 20ft container and £5700 for a 40ft. Depending on what sort of stuff you wish to take, it can work out a better deal to take the lot as you can always sell it once it gets here, if you have already replaced some items. Best to rent full furnished or part furnished until it arrives.

hi zigzag

i know that if me and paul get accepted, we are selling everything and starting again. we just think that the things we have suit the house we have at the moment but may not suit one we get in newzealand, we just wanted to take a few pictures etc, but to be honest i can see it all going. when it comes to it we would like to sell our house fully furnished.

that is a lot of money for the containers

i have just had a look at the frieght forwarders we use at work, as we import a lot of things and it would only cost about £3000 for a 20ft including VAT. so perhaps i might take a few things

does anyone know if it is possible to consolidate containers if you are only taking a small amount of items

with regards

kirstie

yes you can take a part container but it can be delayed for sometime until they find someone else to ship a part container.

We shipped our stuff (somewhere out in the Tasman as we speak). When we did our insurance we had to do an itemised estimation of value. Bearing in mind that we filled almost 2 skips full of cr*p (we have 3 kids!! ) and we had a20ft container, we worked out that to replace evrything was going to be somewhere in the region of £30,000 . My advice would be to bring your stuff with you, unless you are going to be really minted!!! You can always replace it bit by bit when you get here.

Don't bother shipping your dishwashers though, every house, including rentals, has one included

Take everything! We didn't and have been kicking ourselves since. Although we did bring quite a lot over its still cost us a small fortune to replace everything. I gave a brand new carpet away (full house) to my neighbours, if I'd have brought it with me I could have sold it for a really good sum, thats if I didn't use it myself. Then there's things like books....they're really expensive here, and we just about gave them away at a boot sale!

No they don't. As a now ex removalist very few in Sydney for example offer a dishwasher and of those that do then don't count on it being very good. Not too many spend big bucks on appliances for rentals.

When it comes to houses, especially buying, make sure you know what appliances are included in the house sale.

Bring everything you can IMHO. Certain items can be quite pricey here to replace.

You can send stuff by what is known as groupage. This is also what happens if you have too much stuff for your container but not enough over for the next size up.

We were in danger of groupage for about half a dozen boxes but the nice fellas from Crown did a fantastic job of literally squeezing the lot in poor fella slid out of a tiny gap in the corner of our container from behind our mattress

Buy New !!!!!!
It's not worth all the hassle, hassle with removals company, stress, hassles with customs, it goes on. Sell up completely and restart your life, there will be no problems with incompatible plugs, TV systems. It all takes several weeks, You have no furniture or possessions for the last couple of weeks in your place and none for the first couple of weeks in your new place. It costs a fortune - you can buy loads of stuff for the thousands of £££ that you are giving to some clumsy gang of removals men bashing up all your stuff.
In NZ there are sales more or less permanently, and you can get stuff at very good prices, we found an Indonesian furniture specialist who were having a summer sale. You can find loads of stuff second hand maybe in exotic woods such as Rimu, from TradeMe. Warehouse is very good for cheap essentials, and ahem IKEA is opening later on in the year in Auckland and i am sure that the rest of the country will be able to order everything from IKEA too

I don't know - I don't think you can sell things in the UK for half the price they'll take to replace - I'm a take it all with you man.

Ok i think we'll end up (if we ever go!!!) taking some stuff, and buying some stuff new!!!
eg. i was told to take all my kitchen stuff - pots pans, cake tins, baking trays, utensils etc, and it makes sense because they've been accumulated over years!!
Also pine wardrobe hand made by my dad will have to follow us, as well as all our camping gear!!!

But i hate the sofa, that'll be sold/dumped!

Its 18 months before we even apply....so i'm getting way ahead of myself here!!!
