Shipping again!

I have the first shipping company coming over to quote for us in May.
Would really appreciate some pointers..........

What would be your top tip to make sure I ask them?
I know we have had this topic before but any help would be great

Thank you

Re: Shipping again!

Get at least 3 quotes and haggle, haggle, haggle (especially on the insurance)....

The main difficulty we had was that when measuring up our stuff (an average 3 bed house) 1 company said yes everything would fit in a 20ft container, two said it may do - you need to prioritise on the day and be prepared to leave some stuff behind  or get it shipped separately at extra cost (which means extra MAF inspections)...

So needless to say we went with Pickfords who said they didn't think it would fit in a 20ft, but don't worry, they would pack everything into as much space as we needed on a 40ft based on the quote they gave us then the worry is taken away....

So we did, everything arrived into Wellington after 7 weeks smelling of Jayes fluid, passed by MAF, and nothing was broken, damaged or missing:thumbsup:

I would also check who each company uses at the other end. Crown, Pickfords and some others have offices over here so communication is much easier. Others sub-contract work to NZ companies which MAY not be so reliable, but could be cheaper.

Again, we haggled Pickfords down on the insurance to match Letton Percival. We also made sure we had in writing that they would deliver to 40 miles outside Wellington, not 30 as on their original contract and it was easy with them having an office here so we popped in when we arrived, with all our documentation etc.

It's very exciting to be finally getting your quotes. When do you think you'll finally get here?

PS. Don't tell the Wellington lot, but it was a cloudless morning up here on Kapiti, got into Wellington at lunchtime, 4 degrees cooler (according to my car) and cloudy....

Re: Shipping again!

My best tip is to haggle and play one shipper off against the other to get the cost down.

Also to look at independent marine insurance.

Check out with the shipper what is going to happen at the NZ end. You want to know or be prepared if you are going to get stung by a 3rd party 'service fee' by The Moving Company or 'White Van Lines'

Cover and scrub everything that MAF might be interested in with Jeyes.

Keep a list of those items and also any other item you feel MAF might be interested in as you will need those details when it comes to filling out the MAF declaration.

Make sure you get a copy of your Bill of Lading etc. You will be able to track your container's journey using that.

Before the blokes leave after clearing out your house, go around with them to make sure everything that you want taken, has been taken. Look in drawers and stuff like that.

Come back and let us know what the current quotes are. It's good to get up to date info on costs and service.

Re: Shipping again!

Haggling is the way forward.
we have just changed our mover to Pickfords as they have come in with a beat all quote (and i did like their professionalism!) for the relocation and the insurance... although all the companies we tried seemed more than able to do a good job, so it came down to price more than anything.

we made a room by room list of what we were taking and took that round during the consultation as its so hard to remember all your hidden away stuff. by the time it comes to your third company quote, it tends to roll off the tongue!

if you have a leather suite, ask if they do anything extra to protect against mould (eg, sachets of silica gel or stand them on thier ends so stuff isnt sitting on top of them)

so glad things are moving forward for you at last Dewb!
