Settling in to the kiwi workplace

I came across a small pamphlet I thought might be helpful to new migrants which I have linked to below.

Compared to migrant employees from other parts of the world:
  • Kiwis like to work on their own without being closely supervised
  • Kiwis expect everyone to be treated the same
  • Kiwis respect the boss but usually speak to him or her in an
  • informal way
  • Kiwis are willing to take on various tasks, not just those they
  • were hired to do

I think some of those are quite important, having worked in Singapore for many years, Asians in general are big on micro-management and enforcing hierarchies. Which rubs people up the wrong way in NZ, or even the UK.

And even in many US companies, executives would deliberately maintain distance between themselves and normal staff, which does work sometimes - for example people don't relax at company functions if the CEO is there, but also not really how businesses operate in NZ
