Has anyone had to send themselves clothes etc because of crazy baggage allowances?
Because we'll only have work visas initially, we aren't entitled to anymore than 20kgs with any airline.
Anyone have any suggestions of how/who they used to do this? Realise its going to cost a few hundred to send even a 20kg parcel but would be cheaper than paying excess baggage charges with airline so don't really have much choice.

you can ship boxes out, if you don't want the expense of renting a container. the cost seems to be around £250-£300 per cubic metre - we've estimated around 15-20 medium boxes for about £500-£600. Check out the many shipping companies websites for more info. Hope this helps

This may help. We send goods needed by our son-in-law for his shop that he cannot get in NZ:

22 kgs cost £167.90 sent via Parcel Force.

13.870 kgs £123.30 " " " "

You can pay to have it tracked at a cost of £7 - £10 and it will get there 5 - 7 days. You can track it on line.

My parents shipped a load out with DHL, it was new clothes/and bits I'd bought ,but didn't have room to pack. Customs opened the packages and wanted to charge us a few hundred dollars in some kind of tax because the products were new. An argument ensued between my Father in the UK and me here in Wellington. Obviously the bits weren't for commerical use, but there was no getting through to those monkeys. So, just air on the side of caution, if new things are sent over I get my folks to remove tags. Never had any problems with Royal Mail. Sending new stuff, additional charges, etc. So we've never used companies like DHL again.

Its a very simple declaration form you have to fill in at the Post Office for Parcel Force just keep it short & sweet.

Sorry if i'm repeating things, but have you tried actually talking to the airlines, rather that going by what is on the websites.

Otherwise, if you have a 'Transfer 2000' courier firm near you, these always used to be cheaper for international deliverys

I've tried (calling & emailing) Singapore, Air NZ & Emirates & they all say the same - unless you have the right sort of visa or pr, they won't budge on the 20kg allowance.
I don't want to chance having a 'nice' check-in person who lets us off with excess baggage so am happy to pay a few hundred quid & just get it sent!

We are flying out to New Zealand tomorrow for 3 weeks.
We are travelling via USA and by doing this we get double the allowance. So we are both allowed 2 cases of 23 kg each. This is travelling with air new zealand. You only get this if you stop off at USA not Singapore.

this does depend where you're living or shop.

steel yourself and fly via LAX, as the piece system applies (AFIK) and so you get two pieces of luggage per adult/child at 30kgs *each*!
Bit better than the measly allowance via Asia and worth the hassle of US Homeland Security (AKA the Uncle Sam Gestapo) if you are moving over here.......
