I have a bit of knowledge about this industry through a couple of law enforcement and health worker friends.

The situation in the UK is absolutely disgusting, it really is a hidden embarrassment that Britain should be absolutely ashamed of. There is no control at all, and many girls are trafficked, enslaved and subjected to abuse with absolutely no recourse. There are no sexual health checks at all other than volunteer groups that try to help many of the girls, although obviously with the illegal girls that is impossible. And of course within many of the ethnic communities the girls are treated even worse. The industry is run by pimps and crime gangs.

So in comparison with the NZ system where brothels are legalised, girls get health checks, have laws against unprotected or risky sex etc it is very backwards.

IMO NZ leads the world by some margin in it's treatment of women in this industry.

Oh please, don't kid yourselves that it's all safe, controlled and clean.

For every two working in a legal brothel (which incidently could be any house next door to you), there will be another working the streets. For heaven's sake it's the oldest industry in the world and as in every other country, gangs, organised criminals, drugs, pimps and low-life scumbags will always be drawn to the trade. We still have kids and girls on the street against their will, people who do not get a lot of choices in life being bashed and forced to strut their stuff out on the pavements and / or the brothels to feed some pimp's lifestyle and keeping his BMW on the road; funding gang activities, feeding drug habits and so forth.

In 2005, Manukau City Council proposed legislation which would give it control over street prostitution, which would have given it the power to ban them. But conflicting laws within Auckland saw Parliament's local government and environmental committee rejecting the bill.

A lot of women work independently through placing ads in the paper or arranging meetings at motels by txt message, rather than in brothels. Some have such a large client base they don't need the ads or to walk the streets. It will always be dangerous to put yourself in such a vulnerable position with a stranger, and there will always be pimps and those who control and enslave even when prostitution is legal. There will often be drug issues to complicate matter. Considering most clients are married and often high ranking in society there will always be an underground element to it and the potential for crime. However, making it is the world's oldest profession and making it illegal never made it go away - it just pushed it further underground.

Yes, but that is a common denominator in all countries. For various reasons these women (and men) choose not to work, or are not allowed by law, to work in licensed brothels because they are underage, don't have health checks, don't want to work for someone else, have a pimp controlling them etc etc - but the fact is the industry as a whole is a lot better when it is legal, licensed and controlled.

All of which is illegal - so whether it's legalised or not is irrelevant. In the UK, prostitution is - WAIT FOR IT - legal! It's also very widespread and 99% safe. The bad stories you hear are always about those who operate beyond the protection of the law (and I know a bit about this).

The point is - make it legal and you have an opportunity to manage/control it.

Just for the record, in the UK, prostitution is not illegal. It is illegal there to run a brothel - which is defined as being "premises from which more than one is selling sexual services". That said, there is not a single town in the whole of the UK that hasn't got at least several local "working girls". UK has a population of over 60 million, you do the maths - they's not paying themselves are they?

I agree with you - much better legalised...but I thought in UK it was soliciting which was illegal not the act itself and for another person..living off another's immoral earnings is deemed illegal. I still think though that legalising it, should not make it any more appealing as a walk of life..people really should be nurtured to have better self esteem than that.
Also someone who has a 'drug habit' to feed may choose it over shoplifting or housebreaking, so their 'career choice' would not be a particularly free one in my book.
