Sea View/beach close to Mountains for skiing
I call to all those with a greater knowledge of New Zealand to tell me where (if at all ) we could live by a beach, and have easy access to the mountains for skiing.

In christchurch you can live by the beach at many points along the coastline (some nicer than others) and you're only about 1 1/4 from a number of skifields.

Porter Heights skifield, 1 1/4 hours, Mt Hutt (big although not big in the Europe scale) 1 1/2 hours, four small, friendly club skifields in Arthurs Pass - 1.5 - 2 hours away. Then there is the ski touring... big fields in Queenstown, small fields close to Timaru and Fairlie and Kaikoura. Note that these are not fields like you get in Europe, most people drive up for a day (which is good as you can wait to see what the weather does, rather than having to do it all in a week) and the access road is all part of the fun =) In the south island skiing is not a pretentious sport, but one that many people have a go at especially in a season like this one as the snow is great.
Of course skiing in the north island is great as you get to be on a live volcano
