They can start the day after their birthday, so kids tend to trickle into the reception class throughout the year, then as they reach a certain level of the basics (and according to numbers) they move up a class. The start of each term usually sees a group of newbies who had birthdays during the holidays

Bear in mind that all schools are different. Some start in year 0...some in year one depending on their birthday.
Some will change classes in their first year...others won't...just check with the school.
