The scenic trip!
I have decided to hire a camper van when we land in Auckland end of June for a few days and drive to Wellington with the kids rather than fly.
We have just under a week before hubby starts his new job and thought it would be great to see more of North Island.
Any hints of places to visit?
My initial plans are definitely Rotorua and Napier. Was unsure about Waitomo as the children are all under 6 and initial impressions are that there are minimum ages on most cave activities.
My 6 year old definitely wants to visit a Maori village and see some Kiwi birds - any good recommendations???

Rotorua is the place for the last 2 We 'did' a maori evening on a marae with the whole native dress, haka, some singing, a hangi, a torchlit tour through the woods. We had 2 11 year-olds with us and they enjoyed it. Also kiwis and other wildlife right next door. They have a really good tourist information centre there. Cheaper to book through them as they also give you free tickets for other things if you do

You'll luv NZ then - around 15 000 quakes a year. Don't get too many tsunamis though. Last big one to hit NZ as I recall was late 1800's early 1900's. Earthquake off the coast of South America.

Don't go to the famous Kiwi house on SH1 - your six year old will be scarred for life. Filthy hole. Not mentioning any names.

Not a hell of a lot to look at in the North Island to tell you the truth. Rotorua and Taupo is probably it on the way down via the Desert Road. Couple big bloody volcanoes smack dab in the middle. I spent 3 months looking at the sods when I did my army training at Wiaouru. You won't see them though if you branch off to Napier from Taupo.
