If you think you need one then buy one in NZ.

Yeah you'll feel better driving with one initially but don't bother upgrading a UK one with a new map.
Complete waste of money.
You can buy a decent new NZ Garmin or TomTom for $99 and one with lifetime maps for $149 or you could buy a second hand one off TradeMe.

Or......
With most smartphones GoogleMaps does a very good job. My Garmin sits in the glovebox feeling sorry for itself while the iPhone does the job.

There are loads of sat navs going cheap on trademe - probably cos nobody has the need to use them anymore. I had a TomTom in the UK which took me everywhere so I purchased the expensive NZ maps just before I left 5 years ago. I've used it twice (in Auckand) but never felt the need to use it anywhere else so it's sitting in the bottom of a drawer. Don't waste your money :-)

This, I use Nokia Drive on my Lumia 800 (just a cheap smart phone) and it's excellent.

It is, free to use and with offline capability too. Love it.

Note, the proviso is that it is utterly defeated by roadworks in east Christchurch!

we've just come back from Auckland and our poor sat nav is now having to take a break, mad poor road layout, poor signage, impatient incompetent drivers and traffic jams at 4.15pm.

Re: Sat nav

It's Auckland, what did you expect?

It's not a unique problem but it is very interesting. Low density urban sprawl and strip development are the Achilles heel of new world cities.

No one really has a good plan yet that I've seen to transition Auckland from soulless low density sprawl to high density, efficient, affordable, vibrant city. In fact the only propositions I've seen to deal with affordability is to add to sprawl with nasty little "just add water" developments and subdivisions.

Nokia maps are brilliant because they don'tuse any data (you download the maps instead.
Saying that, I am biased as I love my lumia far too much
