And on a related theme, there is little or no evidence that the death penalty deters crime.
Who keeps the score? Just hang them and make the parents pull the lever and then the blight is gone.

Shit happens, does not change my view on these scum.

Riots under another repressive system of government (with a small g). Note the use of the word control? it's all about power and the people who are in a position of authority abusing it

Thousands of residents of a town in southwest China have taken to the streets, smashing police vehicles in the latest protest by citizens angered by the rough handling of local officials, according to news reports.

The protest in Qianxi County, Guizhou province, was the latest of thousands of brief, local riots and demonstrations that happen in China every year, and like many recent outbreaks this one pitted residents against "urban administration" officials charged with enforcing law and order.

The "clash broke out between urban administration officials and the owner of an illegally parked vehicle, drawing in thousands of onlookers and sparking incidents of crowds smashing law enforcement vehicles and blocking roads," the website of China National Radio (cds.cnr.cn) reported today.

Rioters turned over one urban administration vehicle and smashed five police vehicles, while others blocked the main streets around the riot with forklifts and trucks, said the report.

"While dealing with the incident, some police were injured," said the report, which added that by the early hours of Friday the crowds had largely scattered as police asserted control.

Smile Re: Riots.

Good article from BBC magazine looking at the possible causes.

I'll take 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9.

It's always interesting to me when people say things like "It's rap music, that's the culprit...". So what can the choice of people to work in prostitution be blamed on 70's pop band The Police and the choice of postal workers attributed to Postman Pat? The notion is silly, growing up my dad had a Steve Earl tape in the car but I never went into running moonshine or joined a motorcycle gang .

Similarly "Private messaging using mobile phones is what triggered it!" except text messaging has been around since the 90's and social networking is just an extension.

The idea that it could be a "lack of fathers/poor parenting" is just absurd. People where way worse parents in the 19th and 20th century, there where both periods with and without rioting that usually coincided with economic hardship.

Also from someone who wrote a book on the history of riots in London:
Writing at The Financial Times, Violent London: 2000 years of riots, rebels and revolts author Clive Bloom argued that “the spread of riots into other areas of London is exclusively a function of economics, not racial tension.” Bloom insisted that “these are events devoid of political intent” which “have little in common with the student violence earlier this year, except their use of social media as an organisational tool.” Bloom said these riots are driven chiefly by economic hardship: “These are riots marked out by the looting of Foot Locker and Nando’s – the shopping places of Britain’s new underclass. Those who have grown in a world where social identity comes from consumption find themselves barred in times of economic hardship, except by theft.”
If the same thing was to happen here I'd pick early 2012 when National are reelected and reform the Social Welfare system, it's not unprecedented and has happened before. Hopefully though they have learned a salutary lesson from the events in the UK .

I heard that Cameron is to shut down social media (BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter etc) if rioters use them to orchestrate violence. Will he shut down news broadcasting and the interviewing of rioters too since that is what seems to prompt most people to copycat? Who ever thought the BBC could be considered to be subversive?

It makes me shudder that such things are even being discussed, when did Britain become a totalitarian state?

The threat of terrorism was used as an excuse by the previous administration to erode civil liberties, the present seeks to censor and restrict the internet and the British public will sit back and just let it happen.

Grim times indeed..

You think the same sort of thing couldn't happen in New Zealand, think again.
