Not retired but my OH was a serving police officer in the UK & we came over here on the back of him transferring to NZPol. Almost 4 years later he's still a cop here.

Ahh, we're just entering the pension process, the magic 30 years is approaching very soon, but obviously not quite there yet so we're not really in a position to advise? What kind of work are you looking for? We have a friend who came over after 30 years UK police service then worked as a jailer in the cells for a bit, but didn't last long in the job............ preferring a life of playing golf. Which is great if you can afford it, of course!
Good luck with finding the answers to your queries.

I came over to NZ for a month to complete all the NZ Police recruitment tests and then went back home. I passed everything and they gave me an offer of an employment as long as i could then get permanent residency. The immigration process was quick and painless and i'm back in nz now.

I was a serving cop in the UK and still had to do the full 19 week training course down in Wellington. I came over by myself so this wasn't a problem. I'm back working in Auckland now.

I'm sure you already know but www.newcops.co.nz is the recruitment site for the police.

I don't think I could manage going all the way back to basics at training school, I am in my fifties. Having said that I went back into uniform last year after twenty years in a suit. Do they use civilian investigators at all, have not found any reference to them.

No not that I'm aware of.

They used to do conversion courses for UK cops a few years ago when they actively recruited from the UK. The courses were only 10 weeks long and they would then match your salary and take into consideration your previous service.

I've had to go back to the very beginning. It wasn't a big deal for me as i'd only served 4.5 years in England.

The customs training course is done at the police college down near wellington and i think that lasts quite a long time too.

Insurance companies do and there are plenty of companies that provide various investigative and protection services. Have several mates who have done that but know others who have been over trying to get that sort of work only to return to the UK. Malcoltom was one such member here and he's back in the UK. Not sure if he is still active on BE but I have an email address.

Hi sparkywater
We are in the exact same posistion, my hubby is 48 and being forced to retire after 30yrs service in January
We decided in February to turn a negative into a positive and to move to NZ. We then found out that because neither of us have qualifications, just 48yrs of police experience between us, we only qualified for 40points on an EOI
We have been applying for jobs for 4 months now
The police will not take you as support staff unless you have the correct visa, neither will customs or immigration
We have applied for jobs, and have had one interview, but the usual reply is that NZ'ers have priority
My hubby has quite specialised skills and so we are praying that someone will recognise this and offer a job
It is a massive heart wrenching, emotional and draining experience. You think that making the decison is the hardest but after 9mths of being on an emotional roller coaster it takes a toll, I know that there are others that have taken longer
All we want it to improve our childrens future by moving to a better country!

Hi Moonie,
I thought it was probably the case that you had to be resident in the country for any government/local authority job applications. Hopefully we wont have the same problems as you as the wife is a nurse and on the skills shortage list, she is currently sorting out her New Zealand nursing registration. She has to sit an English exam, which is next weekend which struck me as bizarre.
Looks like I will have to wait till we arrive to find some work!!

Hey Sparkeywater, lucky you with your wife's skills. Hubby has just had a interview with the prison service and has applied for probation roles which was allowed, seems strange that different goverment agencies have different rules. Good luck and I hope you get there
