References for rental
Hi,
We land shortly and eventually plan to rent a house. Just wanted to know what others have used as references.
We haven't rented in many years, so an option would be to get a friend to write one!
Any info. most welcome. Cheers.

That's what we did, we got my sister to write a letter saying we had rented from her etc and also got a letter from hubby's employer saying he was fully employed, it did the trick.
Good luck

Re: References for rental
I just bought over our mortgage redemption statement and a couple of old utility bills & council tax bills to show we'd paid them - but we weren't asked to show anything other than our passports. We had to pay 2 weeks rent up front and then 2 weeks rent for the bond and set up a direct debit to pay the rent every fortnight.

We only needed hubbys work contract and our passports to rent , but other agents may vary

Re: References for rental
We usually ask for Employer, if no previous Landlord then a character reference in the UK - say an Accountant, Lawyer or previous Employer. Where possible it is good to have someone locally to where you intend to move to.
For example, I have been referee a few times for people just arriving here, saying I've been liaising with them by email and on the forum for x amount of months, prior to their arrival here and we have met up x amount of times upon their arrival or when they came for their reccie. Whilst I can not vouch for their behaviour as tenants it shows a committment to the move and a network already here that may mean they are likely to stay - from a letting agent's perspective.

We were told as just arrived it was fine as long as they had work details to prove we could pay. Debs and jim were told they already had the best reference and that was getting a visa to come here with police checks etc, you will be fine dont worry

We had nothing apart from a BNZ statement with our UK house sale money in it.

We used the manager from the Top10 where we spent the first two weeks whilst looking for a rental. They were happy to do that and the agent was fine with that.
