Question recruitment agent

I'm almost done with my EOI. A friend of mine suggests for me to have a recruitment agent while my EOI is being processed and hopefully receiving an ITA. I don't know any credible recruitment agent that can be helpful of me and not giving me false pretenses.

Can anyone recommend?

I'll move this to the main forum for you as your post is more about finding a recruitment agency to help with a job offer.

Perhaps you could give some details of the type of work you do and your skills.

Hi
There are many recruitment agencies out here. Some of the bigger ones are Hays (I think hays have an NZ branch in the UK), Adecco, QJumper some specialise in certain industries so it would be useful to know what industry you are in. We found that the smaller recruitment agencies were more helpful not that either of us ended up getting a job through an agencies but through applying through Seek.

Good Luck

thanks BEVS,,, I'm a Piping Design Engineer working in a project management consulting company which has international projects in business areas such as Oil and Gas, Energy, as well as Water and Environment. I don't know of any competent recruitment that could help me in this sector.

thanks Jo-Chris,,, I'm going to try your mentioned companies.

However, do anyone think that those areas I've mentioned has been affected by recession? I'm worried since I have a good paying job here in Abu Dhabi that i could end up applying or in a job not within my range of experience.

Two more thing, I am not yet in NZ, will it be a hindrance in finding suitable job in SEEK?

Would anyone recommend if I have been granted a skilled migrant permit, should I be physically present in NZ?

A friend of mine suggests that I should be there when applying but I don't want to leave my job here in Abu Dhabi without a sure job in NZ.

Please advise. Thanks

If you're specialized, and it sounds like you are, then Seek is a good route, and if they want you, then it won't matter if you're here or not.

Be warned most agents (even the creditable ones) advertise jobs that dont
exhist just to attract potential clients.
The more people they have on their books the easier it is to fill any positions quickly.
This makes them look good to the companies that use them but if there is someone
here in NZ with your talents they will get the job.

I can vouch for this statement, was looking at the "100's" of jobs opened mouthed on seek, after chatting to one (of many) recruitment agencies who called me after applying for 1 job it transpires that if there is an actual job .. and I quote "8 agencies can advertise it, and they will put a new advert up every day" therefore that 1 job (if it exists in the first place) will by the end of week 1 have 40 adverts etc etc.. bust my bubble I can tell ya

40 times may be a bit exaggerated however how many out of over 13k adverts on SEEK do have real jobs behind. Any estimation on that? I would love to have a filter which would select only adverts from employers and hide those from recruiters. Like buying a car from a dealer/individual.

It's important to realise that recruitment agents are self serving like a used car salesman. Their only interest is how much commission they can make so they will never have your (or the company's) best interests at heart. If possible try and apply for jobs directly without an agency.

You could apply that logic to any company and its clients and suppliers....

As I work for a recruitment agency, I would have to disagree. We work for our clients, to ensure we provide the best candidates possible for the job they have available.

It is not in our interest to advertise a role that another agency is alreay advertising as our 'chances' of a successful commission on that role are already compromised.

I reccommend that you research which agency is active witihin your area of expertise, then target them specifically to *assist* you in finding work. No one gets something for nothing - and that includes you. Put the effort in, and you will get results.

Good luck.

Hmmm with respect to the previous poster, my experience of Recruitment Agencies in the UK and NZ are similar. 99% are chancers/schmoozers 1% are honest and work for client, individual and themselves.
You have to go into the situation knowing what your value is and dont take anything for granted no matter what they say and promise you.
I say this with conviction and from sitting on both sides of the fence as an employer and potential employee. I have found the best avenues I have gone down for work are through my own personal network 1st Seek 2nd and a distant (ultimately pointless) 3rd Agencies.

However saying that I am fully aware that my CV is attractive and my immigration status is the thing thats holding me back IMO. If you have PR then you may well find that your UK experience may be something that the Agency will be able to sell quite easily, I suppose you just have to be realistic and know your a commodity.

Recruitment agents? Put it this way, whenever I deal with them, I have a shower afterwards...
