Recommendations for Auckland Starter Accommodation?
Hi all,
My other half and myself are arriving in Auckland in early January. Has anyone any recommendations for somewhere to stay for approximately 10 days in Auckland CBD (while we apartment hunt, get mobile phones etc.)? Priorities are location (CBD), affordability and safety. Hotels/B&Bs/Apartments all fine.
We had planned on staying in the serviced apartments recommended as a good value option by our guidebook but the tripadvisor reviews are truly dreadful.
We want some thatswhere cheap enough that we can rent it for 10 days and take the pressure off! Thanks in advance

My wife, daughter (3 year old) and I stayed in a place called '23 Hepburn' for 3 weeks.
If you google '23 Hepburn' it'll come up as a B&B, but Beth (the lady that runs it) also has two further self contained units.
Cracking view of the Sky Tower and the 3 of us lived in there comfortably for those 3 week.
A 20 minute walk to the centre of the city, or a 5 minute walk up the road to Ponsonby.
You'll get a parking space too.

Tommy's recommendation sounds good, of Hepburn St. Good location too.
As far as accommodation aggregator sites go - ones that list everything and let you adapt your search by type, location, facilities, price etc - the main ones I know of are:
Wotif.co.nz (good for price comparing)
aatravel.co.nz (good for facilities, star ratings etc)
jasons.co.nz (as above)
but you could also try the holiday accommodation options - these might have less in the city, but are always worth a look as they are very home-from-home. They tend to specialise in seaside cottage type things and are often let direct by the owner:
bookabach.co.nz
holidayhouses.co.nz
holidayhomes.co.nz

Depends on what your budget is. We stayed in a Hostel right in the CBD and has a double room for $200/week. It was not "amazing" but it was clean, quiet and good fun to socialise with the other tenants.
Check out the BBH network of hostels.

Give hostels like "The Base" a wide berth, unless you like wading knee deep in vomit and foam, whilst stepping over passed out gap year 18-30 football shirt wearing twazzocks.

This is what my husband received from his new employers for accommodation they have supplied him with
"We have found you a lovely apartment down at the Viaduct – am very jealous as I would quite like to move in myself! Lighter Quay is by the water and on the quieter side of the Viaduct with its numerous restaurants and pubs."
I can let you know after he arrives today what he thinks and a link

Linky: http://www.trademe.co.nz/property/re...-589612904.htm
(as a for example). As an aside, it would be a reasonable place to live if it suited your work and lifestyle - 2 bed apts in stunning locations for mid $300Ks - not everything in Auckland is unaffordable - and you have to start somewhere...
