Rebuilt to Last
On another thread I said:
As badly timed as those comments where I was thinking what an opportunity this could be for Christchurch to start from a clean sheet with many of its buildings. My favourite city in New Zealand was shaped by the distinctive and bold Architecture reflecting the style of the time when it was rebuilt. None of us would talk about the little town of Napier if they had just slapped any old building back up but they didn’t and it’s an investment that has transformed the character of the town paying dividend many times over.
I’m not suggesting Christchurch be rebuilt in an art deco style but perhaps the council could push for a bold, contemporary, modernist style when granting resource consent for new buildings or refurbishing existing buildings in the city. Something to faithfully serve current and future generations of the good people of Christchurch? Any thoughts?
