Re: Racism toward Poms
So no one can be racist to some one who has a touch of all nations Good point Never found any where in Spain serving Square sausage, lava bread or fried apples with the bacon!

Says it all mate, every other person seems to be an escaped mental patient or pregnant welfare leeching teenage mother. Go to Lower Hutt, the shopping really is much better and the people are just normal folk.
As for racism…not been a problem really but then usually us British folk do enjoy a bit of banter with the kiwis. I have found having an accent to actually be an asset, there is a sort of instant value gained from the fact that you are clearly someone who has travelled and hence must have attained some level of success in life to do so .

I have to admit, this kind of thing does concern me. But then I could move within England to say Cornwall and then get abused for being a 'Cockney' (even tho I'm an Essex boy!!).
Someone hit the nail on the head, it is just the small mindedness of some people, try not to let it get you down

Re: Racism toward Poms
I've only had a couple of "you bloody Poms think you know it all...." type remarks since we've been here, and usually from short Kiwi males who'd drunk more than they should and resent that I have a large house, a boat and a beautiful car. They skimmed the fact that, to get these trappings, while they'd been propping up the bar in the '90s, I was working 80 hours a week.....
No, for REAL, fur-lined, Ocean-going racism, you need to be English and work in Glasgow....I'd previously thought it was just banter - until my life was threatened!
Life's a picnic for UK ex-pats in NZ.

Re: Racism toward Poms
Seriously, it's the place that I felt the most uncomfortable.
Six miserable months.
I did a home visit to someone with a racist dog even!!!!!!!
"The dog doesn't like black people"
I guess that's what comes of having combat 18 headquarters in town
I've been harassed by skinheads and generally felt fearful...I've had none of that here
Tell you, I'd much rather deal with a grumpy bloke in toyworld than a load of skins in south east London

Re: Racism toward Poms
I am a Lancashire lass and therefore have a Lancashire accent of which I am not ashamed of. We went on & P & O cruise in September and we chose Freedom Dining which meant we sat with different people every night. There were 4 formal evenings and of course always dressed the part. You can choose to share or request a table for 2, we did not mind sharing. On 3 occasions we sat at a table for 8 we were ignored by the so called posh people and I think that was as soon as we opened our mouths. So there is all sorts of racism in my opinion.
I had my first experience of racism a few weeks ago from a Maori guy whilst buying a lottery ticket. He said us poms couldn't win their lottery. I explained fairly calmly that not all 'us Poms' are loaded, that we live here, work here, pay our taxes & contribute to the local economy & therefore are as entitled as anyone else to win our lottery

I didn't think it was possible too but thick people tend to have very interesting breeds.. I believe racist dogs are all the rage.
