Default Quick Way to understand Kiwi

I think we should all make the effort to learn this as part of being a resident

love it

Met up with a Kiwi friends husband (South Islander) for the first time since our arrival from England and he asked me how we were getting on

I chatted away to him about how much we were enjoying NZ and as I talked his frown got deeper and deeper

My conversation finally dribbled to a halt and at this point he put his hand on my arm, looked into my eyes and said 'For god's sake woman speak bloody English I can't understand a bloody word you are saying!'.....

My Kiwi friend still cringes every time I mention it......

"D" should be for day-boo, it's like a debut but often used on the news when talking about rugby.

Yes, as in "day-boo-tont".

Oh, except I don't they say the longer version like that

AAARRRGGGHH!!!

Van Go.... a famous painter
Toona..... a canned fish
Marone.... a deep shade of red

Why do the Kiwis feel they have to copy the Americans?

Because Auckland wants to be Sydney and Sydney wants to be L.A. Similar to a little brother copying his big brother. New Zealand is a new/young country, so is America. I have heard it said that New Zealand does not have the confidence to establish it's own identity which is why it copies things.
