Quick question about travel insurance?

Just occurred to me that because the house is now let our household insurance policy has changed and we no longer have free travel insurance included...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to get travel insurance for a family of four to NZ?

Should we get a policy for the single trip or an annual policy that would cover us for any travels in/out and around NZ?

I guess if we look at an annual policy it should really be NZ based company...but would this cover us for UK to NZ one-way?

Any reputable companies out there that we should be looking at?

Thanking you in advance
Tan

Hi there

We used Post Office for our one way travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions. Did it all online. I was on BP medication and had to be declared, but upon review they didnt have to amend our policy.

They covered us for 4 days - door to door (car journey to airport, hotel, flight, taxis etc etc and the first day in our new accommodation in NZ).

For a family of four was about £15.

Very efficient and competitive.

Just did an online quote with the post office and came up as £100

Family of four
One-way
12-17 days

Any thoughts as to why so different? (apart from time passed maybe)

hmm interesting - i only moved over in december! My cover was something like £10 and i had to pay the extra £5 for the 2 day period, but even so doesnt add up to £100!
why 12-17 days?

the one way travel is to cover you from door to door. i will go have a look myself and see if i can remember what we chose. BRB

hmmm, this time it quoted me £26, i chose the 3 day option with none of the frills.

I would give them a bell and find out whats wrong!

Have you tried your bank? I know barclays offer travel insurance on some current accounts.

Re: Quick question about travel insurance?

Thank you for starting this thread, we head for NZ on April 19th and it prompted me to ask about insurance. We land in NZ on the 23rd after 2 nights in Hong Kong Disney.
I phoned a local brooker who told me normal travel insurance will not cover us as it assumes one address that you are returning to. Make sure you buy one way cover!
He then went away to research it and got back to me with a quote of £158 for our family of 5!
Seems a bit steep to me so any useful web links would be great!
Thanks

We didn't have travel insurance for one way trip, completely over looked it. It was a bit silly really, as I belive it is illegal to travel out of UK without it, however I could be wrong on that point.

If it is, then I broke the law pretty much every time I left the UK!

We didn't have travel insurance, per se, just ensured that our health insurance covered us abroad and in transit. Didn't have insurance for belongings.

HTH

good thread - I'm sure I've posted our experiences before but we paid about £100 to a specialist one-way Co. (can dig out details if anyone wants them)and got a month of the whole shibang to cover belongings (laptop, etc etc) medical, PL, etc, etc....for a family of four, we did it that way as we wanted to integrate with medical cover that might come onstream once we arrived and got into work and settled into a rental - one less thing to get wrong at the other end and forget to do - trust me you will be busy when you arrive - unless you are the master/mistress of organisation.
Also we had no PR when we arrived.....and PR does make a difference to doctor's fees etc.

So you'd have no PL cover either? Suppose not a problem in NZ (mainly) as ACC covers you accidentally hurting someone.......
??
Usually (in UK) your PL cover comes from home contents - don't think that is always the case in NZ.
Thinks......ahem, I ought to add that from what I know now having PL cover is rather useful if you are in a rental as Landlords' Insurers like to sue the pants off tenants for fires, etc......

Sig or avatar? Sig pic is one that I've used for over 9 years now. Came across it ages ago and actually cyber-bumped into the person who created it eons ago, too bizarre! I asked permission to carry on using it, and they said yes. Avatar is an emote on a debate board I used to own. The "set on fire" one is too big for BE, otherwise I'd use that.

Here it is: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9.../setonfire.gif
