Question about trees
 

In-laws are just back from a recce/visit to sis in law in Auckland and mentioned something about trees.....apparently there are some varieties of native trees that you are not allowed to prune/fell/chop down etc and you are supposed to just leave them alone.
Does anyone know if this is true? Before anyone starts a rant....I am not planning on coming over and chopping down trees willy nilly but it would be useful to know if you bought a house with lots of trees in the section, that you would be able to at least prune them if it started getting dark etc in the house.....this is the problem that sis in law is having. She's been there 7 years and the rumpus room downstairs is now permanently dark and the upstairs is starting to be affected as are the views from the house.

There sure are.......we have a Totara in our garden and I wish we didn't, it drops leaves and nuts things 52 weeks of the year, nothing else around it grows and its roots are destroying my pavers, as its taller than the two story house and only about 5 metres away from it, I hate to think what it is doing to my foundations!!!

Yep,they are all tree huggers here. We bought a house which has 2 native trees on it and you can prune 10% a year of branches with no more than 5cm girth. We started hacking ours a couple of days after we moved in and the council turned up after a neighbour grassed us up"the poms are cutting the trees, the poms are cutting the trees" We have a lovely view that is is going daily(everything grows grows grows here)
Depends on what council you are in as to what is protected. Always check trees on sites, when buying, ours is actually resting on the house and we can't touch it thanks to council.
BTW I do actually like trees (especially the native ones here)but not when they invade my house and view!

Waitakere City would probably one of the "greenest" parts of Auckland and they were pretty cool about us chopping down a 12m native that had overgrown its spot.

The consent was free to get too - we just supplied photos of the overhanging branches, the dying grass on both sides of the property, the leaf litter et al. The consent was given and down she came. We have to replace it with another tree and keep it alive for two years, but we can keep it pruned down to a reasonable height.

Basically any tree over 8m needs consent to come down and any native over 6m. Provided you can prove the tree is a "nuisance", it can come down on the proviso that you replace it.

I got some work colleagues to help. One of them has two huge choppers (as seen above)
