Queenstown rent crisis?

Hi guys,

I'm moving to Queenstown in May 2016, flights and visa are paid for.

I've started looking at rent for two people in Queenstown and seem to be meeting a general consencus of there's very little! Alot of facebook groups I'm in are very competitive with people complaining about the lack of rent opportunity. I have spoke to a few places out there with the possibility of renting one of their apartments, but they seem the more expensive ones (350 dollars a week plus bills).

I wondered if there is anyone out there, or anyone that knows about the renting in May to October in Queenstown and whether 350 dollars a week is too much for someone with a job over their (hopefully).

I have friends in Auckland, so if it is that much of a problem then this will be my back up plan.

Are you asking if $350 per week is affordable ? That of course will depend on you and what type of job you are hoping to get. I guess wages will be at at the low paying end of the scale and if you have to feed yourself and pay power bills then there ain't going to be a lot left at the end of the week.

just looked at trademe rentals and the prices for 2 bedrooms goes from $200/280 for 1 bed in shared house to $675 per week for a 2 bed. had a look on backabach and that was $400 per night.

might have to look at backpackers or hostels campsites or try surf couching.?

If you find Queenstown is a no go how about trying areas just outside with a bit of a drive? Arrowtown (beautiful), Wanaka or Cromwell could be an option but it will take you at least an hour along winding roads (stunning drives but you'll need to concentrate!) Kingston could work, will take you about 45 mins but is smaller than the other places. Could be your only options until you arrive and hopefully find somewhere closer. Or there's freedom camping but that would be a bit of a kerfuffle to say the least. Try renting a campervan with a friend and freedom camp in different spots near Queenstown. Not ideal but beggers can't be choosers!

You might try a cabin in the Top 10 in Queenstown when you first arrive.

Get your feet on the ground for some serious flat hunting.

The camp site is very central to Queenstown.

Also, if you are planning on renting a car for the first few weeks, then try Rent-A-Dent.
They are very cheap and good.
Also, if you take out insurance to cover the rental excess you pay about £40 UKP for a year and save that back in the first week.
