quandry re shipping costs
i've had my first quote in for shipping our stuff to NZ. it was a shock! i've been quoted the equivalent of 6.5k GBP for 450cuft/14cum. i'm in a slightly different situation in that we're shipping from the cayman islands rather than from the uk, everything is expensive here. that is for door to door, full packing, no insurance
we don't have much furniture here, but we planning on bringing the few pieces we had - one tall chest of drawers, 2 bedside tables, (both will have teh drawers filled with 'suff) and my sons bunk bed which is by far the biggest piece of furniture - it's similar to this
i've asked them for a breakdown of the costs and the volume, but ultimately, this price is too much for us and i need to reduce it. i know things are going to be expensive there, but using the bed as an example, i could sell it for 500 bucks here and it may be that it's taking up say 1/3 of our space quote, in which case it's not worth me bringing it is it? am i missing something?

Obviously I don't know everything you are planning taking. We were about £1900 total, including insurance... And we have couches, footstool, double bed, 2 bedside cabinets, chest of drawers, book shelf, piano stool, box of tools, 3 adult bikes, and I think 3 large boxes and 2 small ones.
That's from the Scottish Highlands (not mainland according to most delivery companies!)

Wow that's expensive. Second hand furniture is very cheap here. I personally would ship a few boxes over. That's what we did.
Beds are v reasonable here.

we were not allowed to fill our drawers with stuff as it makes it more difficult for MAF to search through. anything and everything that could be dismantled was. if you can sell the bed for a good price then do so as you may not want to sleep on camp beds/floor until the shipment arrives. We also have found the beds to be a slightly different size to what we had in the UK so most of the fitted sheets don't fit the Kiwi mattresses. we paid roughly 6k, sterling, for a 40ft container back in 2012.

We got 4 month old bunk beds for £100 and a free double bed of of a friend. They aren't more than $150 second hand. I got a tall boy chest, dresser mirror and wardrobe n side table for $150. Immaculate they were. People move back to uk all the time so there's always someone selling off there stuff.i was lucky in that a lady was moving a few weeks after I got her. She was off back to the uk after just 5 months
If you had a well established house ie everything cost a fortune then I'd def get a container. We didn't have a huge amount in our house so didn't see the point.

We also realised, with the hubby already over, there were a few things we didn't think to send... So shipping a few extra boxes, power tools, CD player, took box... Some other bits and pieces.
