Default PSS for partial container? Also shipping tools

Hi everyone. We're just getting into our shipping quotes. We aren't taking furniture or white goods, apart from a few things.

Having gone through a quote on the PSS website, they estimate 155 cubic feet for around £900. How does this sound price-wise? And has anyone used PSS for a partial container shipment?

I've also tried Pickfords, but they seem so clueless on the phone that they have put me off a bit!

Anglopacific came in at around £1100.

Also looking to send a box of tools by air, weighing 40kg (we aren't shipping the tool box as husband needs a new one anyway). They've quoted around £250 for air freight of this, which i think is pretty good.

any thoughts/ other recommendations?

Finally, just starting to think about sorting our clothes out into 'seasons' and shipping the summer ones so that they arrive around the same time as us. is that the best way of doing it? And maybe using vac bags to get more in our shipment?

sorry for all the questions!
thanks

Hi we've got a box which are going to put into a container - we reckon we won't need much space just 1/3. We are getting container weighed this week so will let you know what costs are (we are taking everything though - sofas, beds, side tables, plates etc)

we had a 3 bedroom house and a Zafira we bought over and it went in a 40ft. so does depend on how much household stuff you do have. they put a partition between the household goods and car as they need to anchor the car down. also make sure you have had the car valet inside and out and make sure they do the underneath and then only driven onto the container. we photographed ours being cleaned thoroughly then along with the receipt put the photo's in the gear stick panel to prove what was done

We used PSS but not a part container. We had a full 40ft container shipment through them and would defo recommend. They were great.
Buy anything new back in the UK and ship it as goods here cost a fortune and the quality isn't the best.

We also have a 3 bed house so will probably need a 40 ft container then. So do I take the car to the container and then they clean it all there?
Sorry for the silly questions? Do you know how much it cost for the container?

No you have to clean everything thoroughly back home (or pay someone to do it).

You event have to clean the soles of your shoes I believe!

Pss website allows you to itemise your requirements and get a quote emailed to you as a starting point.

Yes I can confirm it is your responsibility to ensure everything that ventures outside is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected....sports equipment, camping equipment, shoes, garden tools, outside ornaments, cars, bikes, etc etc.
You can of course pay someone to do it but they'll be unlikely give you a guarantee that you won't be charged anything by MAF who are a law unto themselves.
If you think you'll need a 40ft container for a 3 bed house you mustn't be able to move in there ;-)
We had a 5 bed house and fitted into a 40ft container with some spare room. You should only need a 20ft container.
Cost for us was 5000 plus insurance, however we managed to get full accidental breakage cover & total loss etc for free through my employer in NZ. Cost of insurance will be around 1-1.5% of the value or you can just insure specific items. Up to you what risk you want to take. Try Letton Percival in Liverpool who are way cheaper than the shipping companies/removals companies.
Unless you have a decent newish car that'll last you years (run it into the ground) I wouldn't recommend shipping. It's high cost to ship which you'll never get back, the odometer/speedo is in miles/mph when it's KM's/kph here. It can also be a bit of a pain and costly getting some cars through compliance, registration etc here. The UK shipper can't give you a guaranteed price as they have no idea how NZTA will view it this end. You'll also not be able to sell it on for 2 years or you'll be charged 15% GST (NZ goods and services tax). Also, you may find it difficult to sell on cos it's UK spec and I'm assuming a manual gearbox when the majority of cars here are petrol auto. Diesel cars are slowly increasing but there is a mileage levy to pay for all diesels on top of vehicle registration which makes the cost of a diesel just the same as a petrol. Only worth it if you do high miles. Same as LPG cars really.

Does anyone know if it's permitted to pack clothes in suitcases for the partial container shipment rather than using pss boxes? do they then label them up accordingly?

I also have things like a picnic basket, which is like to double up as storage for crockery etc for the move.

Is this allowed?

If you're having the full wrapping service from PSS they'll wrap everything in brown paper wrap no matter how it's presented to them, so yes make full use of luggage, sports holdalls, drawers in chests of drawers, side tables and the like. Fill all spare room with stuff to reduce your cubic meterage. Everything will get an orange sticker on it with name, customer number and destination and an inventory made on a chart with the basic contents of each.

Great, thanks.

Does it just go by volume and not weight?

Yes. When they come round to give you a quote, they'll do it via an ipad or similar. Everything has a pre-programmed size which just adds up as they go along then it's totaled up at the end. Weight doesn't matter. Price is determined by volume in cubic metres.

OK that's good news. None of the shipping companies will come out to give us a quote as it's deemed too low of a volume for that, so we are just going by the rough estimate given using the itemised quotation tool on the PSS website as a ball-bark.

Best get on with vac-bagging my clothes then.

thanks for the advice

We used PSS in a shared container - no complaints here.
