Its a lovely area with a huge variety of places to live.
I could cope with Tauranga and Papamoa but anything further east
would be outside of my comfort zone.

Not sure there is much IT work there, unless it's very local, small stuff - would imagine hard to get jobs and the pay wouldn't be great.

What sort of work is he after?

Pretty hard going finding IT work here in Tauranga, depending on his speciality ? If you're talking specialist work you'd have to be looking at Wellington or Auckland. Not many big companies in Tauranga. You may have to settle for IT work for Tauranga or Western Bay Council or one of the bigger firms who have offices in Tauranga CBD but there aren't many. A mate of mine works for IT Task Force as a technician/engineer.
There isn't a huge pool of jobs in any industry here really. It has taken the wife 3 years to get an offer of part time permanent hours as a nurse.
Awesome place to live that's for sure. Cost of living is rising. Difficult to find a rental and buying property is silly money and getting worse.
Many great suburbs to live and a few that I wouldn't.
