Primary teacher looking to teach in NZ
 

Hi, I would be really interested in any info. I've been 'lurking' for a while now! We haven't applied EOI yet but wondered whether it was better to go over to NZ on spec to try for work or whether to do the EOI. I''ve 21 years experience and am studiying in my own time for Post grad in Specialist maths.
Please help!:)

sorry cant help but there was a big piece in the herald yesterday saying there are now
hundreds of newly qualified teachers unable to find jobs

Teachers aren't on the shortage lists anymore :frown: but there is still hope if you can prove you have something to offer that no one in NZ can offer, and the Principal is willing to back you. Are you Primary or High School? Are you willing to go anywhere in NZ or have you got a place in mind.

Lots of NZ qualified teachers, both primary and secondary out of work this year.
I got a job this year, they had over 80 applicants so I was very lucky to get it, but I had been offering my services to the school for free for the previous 6 months so I guess that helped.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your replies. Can I ask which areas or is it all areas that have a shortage of jobs? Is it just the cities? I'll be coming with my husband and six year old twins and it won't really matter at first where we are ( within reason of course!)

It's all across New Zealand . There is a glut of teachers at present chasing too few jobs. Here is a recent ARTICLE about this.

No idea if a specialised math thing would help at all. My feeling is that homegrown teachers would have precedence.

Also, maybe other teachers here can advice about the Te Reo aspect of things. Did it become compulsory to have education and training. ARTICLE

The situation regarding teachers in NZ is very similar to the UK - far too many people chasing far too few jobs. I've a friend in Devon who's been chasing fulltime work for 4 years without luck.

Bevs is right, there are far too many Kiwi qualified teachers chasing far too few jobs, hence the removal from the immigration list. Our local primary didn't even advertise but recruited 2 male kiwi trained teachers. The other school I've been in advertised and received over 100 CVs and also hired a kiwi trained male teacher....there's a pattern!! Schools can pick and choose who they want at the moment. Most teaching jobs are also fixed term contracts.

Maths is the one area of primary education that is taught in a completely different way to the UK - look at nzmaths.co.nz for unit plans etc. It's all about real life experiences and 'understanding number'. Most schools use the NZ numeracy project which you'll find details of on the tki website. You'd be able to adapt easily (although it may do your head in) but from a CV point of few it's a different story.

To answer Bevs question yes kiwi trained teachers study te reo. I did a level 1 paper which involved the culture and language. We also did a level 2 social issues in education paper which involved studying the history of education since the 1870s to understand the issues surrounding Maori/Pacific Island education and studying Te kotahitanga interventions etc.

If you come over, you need to be prepared to do a lot of volunteer work as BabyBella suggests (and did herself) and build up contacts, as I said earlier schools aren't even needing to advertise jobs..... only 15-20% of graduates from my course got jobs last year and that's all over NZ as it was an online degree.

Be realistic in your plans to come over and make sure you've got the finances to cover not having work. Teachers generally choose their own relievers so again it's about contacts.

I find this very intriguing, how exactly is it different to UK way of teaching? I looked at the website and it looks very like the ones we use?
