Primary School Teacher looking to escape to NZ.
Hello - can anyone help me please?
Is there anyone out there that has emigrated as a primary school teacher?
At the moment, I have 95 points in order to emigrate without a job and 145 with a job. With the pool at 100 - I obviously need a job.
I'm with an agency at the moment who want me to go over in Ocotber (Auckland) in order to attend interviews and hopefully get a job.
Has anyone else been in this situation?
I know that I need to have a 12 month contract at least in order to get residency.
Also what are the prices like for electrical stuff such as computers and tvs etc?
Should I buy in the UK and bring over - or buy in NZ?
Thanks

Haven't done it but heard a lot of stories, Teachers and midwives usually get plenty of job offers well in advance (bit of a shortage in NZ) and that's all that matters.
Go for it!

Hello Saint. You will need to do your research carefully here. As I understand it there is an abundance of primary teachers and it can be very difficult to get a job in that area, secondary teachers sepecialising in areas such as maths and science I gather are in short supply. I spoke to a mature student primary teacher last week who said only 30% of the last intake got jobs. As for computers, a package from places like the warehouse including printer/copiers etc are under $1000.TVs etc are at throw away prices now depending on quality. Our tumble dryer broke down after 7 years continual use last week and I asked the repairman about whether the expensive European models would be a good buy he stated that parts can be very difficult to get hold of and very expensive to repair. Cheers binman

Thanks a lot Binman and Don.
Just to clarify my situation.
The agency that's helping me is based in Auckland (where primary teachers are mostly in need - growing city etc).
I'm not paying them, they kind of work for the NZ govt recruiting here in the UK -I had an interview in Jan in London.
Just wondered if anyone else had done this?
They're called Multiserve - big ad in the Times Educational Supplement.
Thanks again for any help.

Hey Damages
On top of sorting out interviews - they give some help as to where and what I can rent etc when I get there - I've had lots of good info and websites from them. The govt also gives you a relocation fee if you're a teacher - depending upon the length of the contract you get. I think its up to $5000. You only get it once you have worked about 8 weeks and you have to work a certain amount of time (sorry forgotten how much) otherwise you have to pay it all back.
Yes they do seem very good.
They've rung up one of my referees already (1 hour call!) and are ringing me for the second time on Tuesday in order to answer some queries I have.

Hi, Everyone,
Campbell's information is useful and positive, however, can we have some comment from PGCE primary teachers who moved to Auckland?
