Preparation for packers
 

Did anyone do any prep work for the packers?

We are scheduled for a two day pack at the end of the week (stuff is going into storage until we ship approx Nov)....so just wondering if it would help to start putting stuff into piles. We will take down all our flat pack stuff, any other tips to make it a bit easier?

We will have a designated no pack area as we have to have clothes and some other bits and bobs until Jan.

Have done an epic shop at IKEA! Arrgh feel like I am going a bit mad!

Our packers told us if we had any empty drawers, trunks etc to fill them up with bedding etc as it saves hugely on space.

Wouldnt bother putting in piles etc though

we were told just to leave them to it as they do it day in day out and would need to check everything they pack can actually be shipped.

you won't be able to, we had 4 blokes all doing differing rooms at the same time. things did get packed that I didn't really want packed, mother in laws birthday present being one, so I would say just make sure you have all the things you don't want packed away from packing hands

My only tips are to package things that have parts together, i.e. I had a mini gym trampoline and they unscrewed the legs and put each leg in a random box - took me ages to find all 6 of them! I should have unscrewed the legs and taped them to the mat part.

Also, with packers, they tend to use space efficiently in each box, so you won't find similar things together. Make sure you know which box the really important things go into.

Also, hide your rubbish bins cos they have been known to transport full bins to NZ, ditto full laundry baskets.

Keep anything you don't want packed well out of the way .

As Capp said, tape stuff that needs to stay together otherwise it will end up in different boxes.

Make a list of anything that you feel MAF might be interested in. It will help with the MAF clearance forms this end.

Get a copy of the bill of lading ( inventory)

You will be surprised at the speed the pack will go at. These people are fast.

We designated the bathroom as the "pack nothing in here" room, complete with door warning note and the night before just moved anything we didn't want packed into it.

Confer with the above advice to tape together things that would be really annoying to find scattered across boxes, like leads to things and trampoline bits.

I'm quite sure they'd love your micro managing- go for it! They packed around my husband and lying on our bed trying to sort insurance (via Letton Percival- ace, cheap and well recommended) cos we'd forgotten it but also both suffering with the worst flu :thumbdown:

lol, pmsl- what am I talking about; I've done international moves three times! That was the first- the second and third were much easier affairs, though we packed ourselves for Oz> NZ and despite only taking exactly what had been moved NZ> Oz a couple of months prior, we had bags more room than when they packed and could find everything at the other end!

Yep, they packed my nicotine patches from the kitchen window. I did manage to give up 3 months into NZ (when my patches caught up with me).

I have just cleaned our Walking Boots with Jeyes Fluid and my OH has cleaned his bicycle tyres with a toothbrush and Jeyes Fluid. We have cleaned all our gardening equipment with Jeyes Fluid and anything rusty we have dumped. We will make sure that all the stuff that we think MAF will want to look at is at the front of the container when the doors are sealed!!!:eek::eek::eek:

3/4 of the way through the pack...was up late last night doing all the shoes with a toothbrush!

does it have to be Jeyes - is disinfectatnt not the same regardless of brand name?

I think MAF have an approved list of disinfectants and Jeyes is on it (could be wrong), also I think Jeyes is pretty hardcore so will definitely kill all the nasties.

Jeyes is one of the more common ones, and no household disinfectant wont do. With regard to rust, I was told as long as it wasnt flaky any rusty tools etc were okay as long as treated.
