Not something I am prepared to state publically. Sorry.

Why start a thread just to hear moans and groans, as I'm sure they wont make you feel happy? Rather think positive about wherever you may be; it will get you further.

More than happy to have this thread deleted. I'm not sure I have heard of any prejudice at all during the last 24 months of interest in New Zealand. I was surprised to see it documented in other threads. I for one am not looking for a moan column. I'll take it as it is, as I know it is different 'Viva la difference' in a sense. I'm going hit the ground running and try to stay on my feet.

Give this thread no more interest.

If you are experiencing whinging poms then an 'Ex British Pats' site is going to contain a large percentage of them

When we were looking at moving 'down under' we naturally considered Australia as an option as well. One thing that always stuck with me was a comment from an expat in Oz who said that if you were to move to Australia, then you should be prepared - as an English migrant - to be "the most hated type of person in Australia"

That, and the thought of my kids growing up as Australians, were a couple of factors that swayed us towards NZ. Where I am more than happy for us all to regard ourselves as just as much Kiwi as English. In fact, the kids are pretty much pure kiwi.

I would consider the definition of prejudice to be 'preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience'. The majority of "prejudice" I've encountered in NZ is anti-Asian, but I would say that it is based upon what people feel towards the asian population here. That is, that their behavior has made some people feel anti them? (Sorry, not explaining that very well…)

To be fair to Snaps, the thread has been created at a suggestion from me in this thread.

Katec19 posed the question and rather than derail that thread's purpose & given the subject can be emotive, depending on one's own personal experiences and perceptions of this , I suggested the topic be raised separately for discussion.

So. If you wish to discuss the issue of prejudice in NZ, this is the thread for it.

I've had a few vindictive comments whilst down south, that we (all migrants) are taking all the jobs, can just walk into the country, migrants come over with with lots of money and increase the cost of housing etc. Fair point maybe, but we arrived with only $5k in the bank and only our hopes/aspirations. If you don't want our skills and 30 odd years of tax revenue then fine, perhaps having 9 kids and no job would be a better model of migrant.

I feel a deeply resentful prejudice against people who are innately nasty, horrible people but have inexplicably nice, caring, interesting or thoughtful husbands or wives. Anyone else get this?

Opposites attract, perhaps?

I can't think of any comments or prejudice I've experienced. There's been piss taking but it's obviously been that and I just give the same back. It's all fine. No worse than I used to get as a North Easterner working in the South

Cant think of a single instance where a client has intimated that they're at all unhappy with my nationality.

The most amusing 'prejudice' we encountered was when we moved down from Auckland to south of Dunners. We were introduced like this.
This is Stu (he's a pom).
Oh.
This is ____(wifes name) she's an Aucklander.
Arrghh (rolls eyes).
In my experience you'll be judged a wee bit until you've proven you're not afraid to roll your sleeves up and pitch in.
To be fair the English are worse. They like running gags and reminders, where as here, once the initial p-take is over and done with, no one mentions it again.
But I would say there is no advantage to having an English accent here. No one thinks it's cute or sexy like they seem to in the US.

I got a lovely compliment from a housewife about my Yorkshire accent in Countdown on Monday night, bless.
