In some parts of Porirua it can be a little rough but you can get this anywhere. There are some lovely houses in Porirua and the homes with the views fetch up to a million dollars. It all depends on what part of Porirua you plan on staying as I said some areas are really fantastic with views and all.

Dont be put off by what people say after all it seems to be booming with many industrial sites and great stores to shop at. There are many out of towners who tend to shop in Porirua simply because it does offer a lot in terms of shopping. I was born and raised in Porirua but spend a lot of my time overseas... So good luck...LW

you will find this in NZ, most areas have nice gems if you find them, even if the area genereally has a name/ reputation for being run down. i think porirua has a general reputation for being a bit rough and run down, but there are probably some very nice properties to be found as well.

maybe titahi bay is a nicer option, in generally the same area, but im not sure.

There are some areas of Porirua you *definitely* need to stay away from - but, as others have said, Porirua City has some great facilities and shows bigger % house value increases than most other Wellington region areas.

The kiwis like to think they're not class conscious - but to many, mention you live in Porirua, and you will see a flicker of prejudice.

Personally I don't rate Porirua to live. Yes it has good amenities - water centre, good library, plenty of good schools, courthouse (well used), great shopping etc. But IMO it has a run down feel to it. There's not much money around. Quite an obvious mongrel mob presence in the town centre (not intimidatin - just there).
Yes there may well be some nice areas with nice views, but personally I'd head 20 mins out from the urban centre.

I live in and work in Porirua and I love it. Papakowhai, Paremata, Plimmerton, Whitby and Camborne are all nice areas. People here are so nice and friendly, Porirua has been stigmatised because of a previous reputation. Even the worst areas are clean, tidy and have nice gardens. There is not a big Mongrel Mob presence, we have only seen a couple, and only know what they are by the jackets that they wear, no different to Hells Angels or any gang culture back home.
Both my hubby, son and myself work and socialise with people from different cultures that also live in the so called bad areas of Porirua, and we have found them to be lovely and helpful people.
I worked in far worse areas and came across far worse people back home, whose presence was intimidating. It's the same the world over, if you mind your own business, people tend not to bother you.

There you go, a more accurate picture from someone who lives there rather than from me who only visits every 2 weeks or so.
