Population Decline

Found this to be extremely interesting especially in a world where we choose to ignore it yet in my view is bigger than the effects of climate change

Re: Population Decline
To summarise then, the population decline is due to
1. Working women
2. Divorce
3. The pill
4. The sexual revolution
5. Breakdown of the traditional family
6. Prosperity
And the solution is a return to patriarchy and the 'gold standard' of marriage.
They also comment that the fact that people are not breeding like rabbits disputes Darwin's theory of evolution. But it's ok, because people of faith are still breeding, so the future is not as bleak as first thought.
I don't think film contributes much to human endeavour.

Re: Population Decline
That doco is pretty old, has there been a shred of evidence since that shows the decline in population reaching a crisis at any point soon?

In guess we'll know it's time to really worry when we start to see Sir Bob Geldof on TV complaining about a shortage of malnourished babies and starving children that need our support.

Re: Population Decline
The notion of a couple remaining childfree by choice is more common and accepted nowadays. Many couples decide they don't want kids and those who do want them are having fewer. It's becoming more and more expensive to raise a family so I can perfectly understand why couples don't want many. And then there's the couples who can't conceive, which seems to be more common today (my observation rather than knowing figures). Simple solution is to breed more! Reality is I'm not sure you can force that on to a couple!

Re: Population Decline
Population may be declining in highly (over) civilised societies where the standard of living and especially the number of options is so high that child bearing and rearing seems like an unwanted chore.
Women bear the brunt of child rearing and can miss out on most of the exciting and fulfilling things that men get up to.
So for example child rearing is dropping off in Japan, and in certain sections of the UK.
However as far as I know the world population is still growing rapidly.
So do what you do with manufactured goods.
If you can't be arsed to make them yourself and you can afford it, then import from somewhere else.
In people terms this is immigration.

Re: Population Decline
Unlike climate change noone disputes population Decline, why is it everyone including yourself with this comment ignores how it is already affecting world economies in a disastrous way especially with Japan today whose population has dropped by 1 million in the last 5 years. Is it because the causes of population decline Is something we all adhere to? This to me is similar to how we are so ignorant that many of our products we purchase are made in developing countries under slave labour, we are ignorant because it benefits the lifestyle we choose to live. Our children will curse us for our selfishness if we let this happen

Agree and I don't think anyone has to be worried about population decline. Countries like Japan need a population decline and it's already improved air quality (the kids won't curse us:-).

Re: Population Decline
I agree. I don't plan on having kids (though support my taxes going to subsidize those who do) and I don't think that's a bad thing. Less people = less pressure on the earth and better overall survival chances for our species. The fact population decline is having an economic impact can be managed if we face it properly. Having 11 billion plus people all wanting a first world lifestyle can't be managed financially or environmentally.

Re: Population Decline
WRT to having/ not having children, it is the ultimate catch-22 situation: once you have them you would (almost) never wish you had not and yet, at the same time, you then entirely understand why some folk choose not to have them. I'm glad my daughters know a few adult women who consciously chose not to have children and have perfectly dandy lives. Hopefully they will make a decision to have or not have children rather than feeling it is a given that they will.

Re: Population Decline
Then there are those who think the world is standing still and the rise in AI, robotic manufacturing etc won't dramatically change society.
With all those blue collar and many middle class jobs disappearing in a generation the smaller the population the better, unless you want a very large 'unemployed class'.

Re: Population Decline
I don't think many people watched this at all or perhaps they merely disagree but relying on migration for a sustainable economy is naive. One nation may benefit while another enters great economic decline. Japan is a nation where retirement has become a dream for so many now over 65. The economy simply cannot sustain the aging population and most over 65 have to work to survive and do so until they are dead.
How naive and foolish to think less people means more for the rest, this is the most selfish mentality to rock Western society. Many nations are already starting to fall behind in birth rates in which their population is falling dramatically.
