Default Plugs!!!!!!!

This probably sounds like a tiny detail but it has been really bugging me. We plan to transport the majority of our things from the UK. Will I need to buy a million travel plugs????????

well, you could buy a bunch of plugs and change them...

But for things like phone chargers that are just like a big plug, then you'll need adaptors

I'd bring multiway UK sockets - that way you only have to change one plug....I wouldn't use one with an adaptor - could be a risk.

yeh, thats a good idea. All my computer equipment in my office is pluged into a UK multiway, works fine.

I think adaptors should be ok if you buy decent quality ones with all three pins. Dick Smith have good quality UK->NZ ones but they cost about $12 each.

Also you can also get replacement power cords from all sorts of places.

After 3 years about half our stuff still have UK plugs on - too much hassle changing them!

You can buy cheap adaptors at many $2 shops or TradeMe (we got a 24 pack for $20 inc postage from TradeMe), although the important stuff like the freezer has a $10 Dick Smith one! UK multiways are good for computers/stereo etc...

be careful about what plugs you replace - your home insurance may be negated if there's a fire and they conclude you've done diy on your plugs! - just read the fine print. adaptors should be fine though.

Yes they will all work (except perhaps your sky or freeview box, but you probably don't own those). Some older TVs may need a bit of work to get the signal, or alternatively they can be used through a DVD, VCR or Sky tuner/decoder.

My view is if you are bringing a container then bring as much as you own (minus any stuff that you should really have thrown out years ago)

What worked well for us was to buy a couple of UK multi-plug, then attach an NZ plug. I am currently using one UK 5-socket for my iron and a few kitchen appliances eg sandwich toaster, waffle iron and stick blender.

Be careful re TVs - we were advised that our big TV would be fine - nope - it really didn't like the trip (something to do with internal magnets) and was a write-off. On the other hand our 10 year old two bob portable was fine.

According to OH NZ plugs are a b*gger to change to from UK plugs, but otherwise all the electrics have been fine!

You're not kidding, I attempted fitting a NZ plug to a set of lights at Christmas
The plug is now about 50m from our house in some very long grass
