have you tried www.goggle.co.nz and typing in Plimmerton?, i am sure you will get loads of help regarding the area, using the Google NZ site, you will get to see lots more from NZ.

Keep the questions coming, we are all glad to help.

And you can also go on one of the photo sites like Flickr and see loads of photos just by typing in "Plimmerton" - and do not forget Google Earth which is great.

As a boy in the 70's I lived just outside Plimmerton (Mana) and went to school at Plimmerton School. I was also at Plimmerton for a short visit in 2006. It's a nice place with a sandy and safe beach (sand dunes to the south and rocks further up the coast). There is a train station which from memory is about 30 mins from Wellington whilst the SH1 is also in close proximity. There are plenty of walks that you can do including on the beach and hills. No doubt someone who now knows modern Plimmerton can tell you more ref other facilities.

Best of luck.

Hi John,

Plimmerton is great! Expensive but great!! It's relatively small and serviced by local shops in Mana, a long walk or short drive away, though there are the odd shop or two within the immediate area. Bigger shops are in Porirua City. The beach is small but the best in the area, but you have to watch the tides as it does come in a long way. You can walk for miles if you like... leisure pool is in Porirua and is very good, about $4 gets you a good swim, spa pool, sauna and steam room... Golf? Well you can't get much better than just up the coast in Paraparaumu is a world class championship golf course, that hosts the NZ Open... even Tiger Woods has played there and you can get a round on it without a handicap card I believe for about $60. There are also cheaper courses located along the SH58 towards the Hutt Valley. Anything else you'd like to know just shout...

Re: PLIMMERTON

Hello there,

We currently live on the border between Plimmerton and Camborne. Plimmerton is just wonderful. We often stroll along the beach. There are some nice cafes and a just fantastic Indian restuarant - best I've had in NZ. The calibre of person is so much better here, older, quiet, just how I like it! There is also a Doctors Surgery which doesn't have a waiting list and they're really friendly and helpful in there, the sort that spend ages with you as opposed to palming you off out the door. There is a train station if you're into public transport with regular trains to the city or the other way (Param). Mana Esplanade has pretty much all you need, New World (like a Tesco Metro), little shops, petrol station, etc. We love living here, as opposed to in the city. It makes NZ just that tad more bearable. House prices are just coming down here, a lovely 4 bedroom home around 600k upwards. There's not too many rentals here or in Plimmerton, but the rent prices tend to be around $550 upwards per week for a modest 4/5 bedroom home. I would rather wait to buy until the bottom drops out of the market. We had made moves to buy our rental, at the time it would have been upwards from $800k, and I would have been GUTTED because now it'll be significantly less!

There isn't a golf course, but a short trip towards the Haywards and there is Petone Golf course (not sure why, its certainly not in Petone). Have a look online. Its about 10 mins from us, well, that's us driving! Maybe a bit more. The only BAD thing about this area is that your nearest shopping centre is Porirua which is just rank and full of horrible people. Sometimes we trip out to Param for a change.

Good luck with the move, I think Karanious posted some pictures on here a little while back of the beaches in Plimmerton - maybe touch base with her and see if you can see them again.

Take care!

i personally think porirua shopping mall and centre is great, loads of choice and friendly and helpful locals and not full of "rank" people but a mix of cultures which is what new zealand is all about.

Very diplomatic! Says it all really!

Plimmerton is great. It has a real village feel to it. The shop owners will spend the time to ask how your day was and will remember you next time you go in. Nice cafes, not a bad beach, views over the south island from pretty much every house in the area. The downside is that most houses in Plimmerton are South-facing, which is good in UK, but here it means that they may not get the sun much - something to look out for. However, the sun sets over the water and on a beautiful winters day, it can be just as spectacular as the sunsets you get in the South Pacific islands.

Parapararaparaumumu is a good golf course, but very long and difficult and is a links course. If you like golf for the scenery and the day out, rather than the thrill of chasing a little stupid ball around trying to get it into a hole the size of a can of baked beans, then Judgeford is the course for you! Tree-lined fairways, set at the foot of the rolling Hayward Hills...much nicer really.

Train from Plimmerton is very good. I have taken it myself a few times and it costs $6 one way into Wellington at peak times, with the last train back leaving at about 11pm I think. Takes about the same time to train to Wellington as it does by car (25 mins) without the parking costs/hassles if you don't have an allocated park. Also, it stops at Plimmerton before Porirua, so you get on before the riff-raff! :D

Very well situated for day trips as you can go in to Wellington (and from there to the South Island by ferry), across the Haywards to the Hutt and further over to the Wairarapa, or up the coast to Kapiti and beyond!

Re: PLIMMERTON

To be fair though, Porirua isn't all that bad. You soon find out where not to go, to leave the nice car at home, dress down, and divide you cash up between several pockets or a hidden cash belt. And if it is too long to wait til pay day Porirua is the place to be - there are plenty of loan shops (or bookies, if you're feeling flush). Still...could be worse...could be Auckland!

I went to the shops there for the first time a couple of weeks ago 'Coastlands Shopping' and was very disappointed.
I don't live in Porirua but occasionally go to the Mall there without feeling unsafe - usually shop in Wellington itself but of the malls my favourite is definitely the one in Lower Hutt. Without a Bluewater or Lakeside, you definitely have to ring the changes.

Agree with you on that one. Queensgate is the better option, however if i ever won the lottery Kirkcaldies would take number one spot. (Thought to self, "dream on"):D

Pool - Reasonable (and cheap) pool at Porirua, not the greatest area but no real problems.

Beach - A small but very popular (often crowded) beach at Plimmerton which shelves very gently. Drive north for 20 mins to find a beach that runs for miles and miles, but you have to negotiate the cars and motor bikes that ride up and down it.

Golf - for most golfers the Judgeford golf club on SH58 will offer the best balance between cost, quality and socialising. This is only 5/10 minute drive.
There is a very cheap but basic 9 hole course at Pautahanui, theres never been anyone on it when Ive been there.

Walking - there are a reasonable number of places to walk in this area - should keep you interested for a year or two until you realise that Wellington is actually quite remote.

Completely agree with you there! It took us about 3 months to get bored! You can either go up the Kapiti coast or to the Wairarapa...that is it! Unless you want to drive for 4 hours to see something different.
