Thought this was a useful article for folks doing the maths for cost of living:

The average household income for New Zealand is now $64,000, with housing costs makes up a large portion of expenditure.
Based on this total, and not taking into consideration any taxes and/or gains, such as Working For Families tax credits, the average weekly income is $1,230.77.
Many recommend that rent or mortgage payments should be around a third of the total income - in this case $410.25
We took to Trade Me to discover what properties are available for rent around New Zealand for between $400-450.

Interesting to read that 1/3rd is still the recommended ratio. Was the same rule of thumb when I was starting out back in the stone age.
Also noted that we fall short of the average household income.
Good job we did our 30+ years stint on the mortgage front.
