Petrol

I'm not saying that at all, but just dont run away thinking that NZ fuel overpriced
Its been cheaper than most countries in Europe for years, and still is. Why else do you think that large engined cars have sold so well here.
How many 5 litre V8s do you think Ford and General motors sell in the UK?
And remember that the UK doesn't have the most expensive petrol in Europe, by a long chalk.

Usually you get a voucher with your supermarket shopping receipt for 4c off a litre. I got one for 15c off a litre last week. Filled up my car today that was empty and that amounted to the following;
50L @ 2.109/L $105.45
Fuel Discount of 15c/L = $7:50 saving.
Total = $97:95

According to the latest AA survey, the UK has the 9th most expensive petrol in Europe, behind Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden and France.

They were offering 12c a litre off a little while ago if you spent more than $50, so I was doing lots of $50 shops, but they have obviously got wise to that

Unfortunately where we are there is NO public transport service at all, so you have no choice to use the car, however, I am trying to combine my journeys, take it in turns with parents for after school activities and have taken my foot off the pedal and where possible ( i.e not gonna cause a horrendus queue behind me, ) I am driving at around 80kmph. All these things combined is making a tank last for another 3 or 4 days to what it was

So $14.35 is equivalent to £5.75 at an exchange rate of $2.50 to £1
With UK petrol at £1.25 a litre that means a min wage worker can buy 4.6 litres of fuel for 1 hours work
A minimum wage worker in NZ can buy 5.7 litres for 1 hours work, more if you take supermarket discounts into account
So by whatever means you compare it, NZ fuel is still relativerly cheap

It makes no difference we can moan as much as we like about the price of petrol (and we do) IT AINT GONNA GO DOWN, BUT UP.

RUC is based on distance, not the cost of fuel.
For a typical diesel road car its about 3.5 cents per Kilometer
So assuming fuel consumption of say, 14k/liter that would add about 50c to the cost of a liter of diesel.
Paradoxicaly , the better your fuel consumption figure, the more RUC add to your fuel costs
So imagine driving a small european diesel (like a Ford Fiesta) that does 50mpg, which is 17.7 km/liter. RUC would add 62c to the cost of a liter of fuel.
Taking the calculation a little further you come to the conclusion that for a small car, its actually cheaper to use petrol !
God knows why NZ persists with RUC. Why not just tax road diesel, like in the UK ?

In the UK there are two types of diesel.. Road diesel, bought at the pump, is taxed just like petrol.
Agricultural Diesel (so called Red Diesel) has little or no tax on it, but is strictly for agricultural use. If the cops catch you using red diesel in your road car, the penalties can be quite severe.
I suspect that the real reason NZ persists with RUC is that so many people have access to diesel from farms, that the UK system would be impossible to police.
