Re: Peter Bills- Cost of Living
Seems to me it is nonsense designed to backpedal on the 'offensive' article he wrote about NZ. Remind me how much is a pint or bottle of beer in the UK?
Should we be at all amazed that French wine is actually cheaper in France than it is in the UK. Pity the same isn't true for NZ produce, such as the lamb or wine.
Still why should we care how much anything costs in London, so few Kiwis can even afford the airfare to travel there for a holiday on a Kiwi wage. However, if I could afford the airfare from NZ, I could do the accommodation on the cheap and be rest assured of a nice clean respectable place to rest my head for 29 quid a night, a full English breakfast for a couple of quid or a dinner for two from M&S for ten quid.
I certainly wouldn't need to be paying NZ $100+ bucks a night for the privilege of either staying in a glorified van or some rancid 1970s motel.

Actually, Bo Jangles, with the NZD/GBP rate & the competitive nature of flight prices (even with the fuel tax), there has never been a better time to go to the UK for a holiday.
Leither, once you've calmed down, swalled those tablets the doctor has requested you take, performed the requisite 30 minutes of Tai Chi that your anger management specialist has suggested..........& have a look in the NZ Herald where this piece is located. No, it's not in the news desk, or even the sports pages. F*** me, it's firmly ensconsed in the 'opinion' pages.
He expressed an opinion. I happened to agree with a lot he said about NZ. In addition, he covers rugby, globally, for a large UK newspaper, so I'm not entirely convinced he's trying to soften up NZ with this piece on the UK for tickets, he's going to have better seats than even John Key in the new media centre at Eden Park. As for his fondness for NZ, he still hasn't stopped going on about the BOD tackle in 2005, that should give you some idea as to how he normally sits with the NZ rugby public (he's right on the tackle, too).

Next time you see an opinion expressed, don't then post that there has been a 500% increase in Council Tax (actually it was 533.3% but who's quibbling) as if it was a fact. Take a second to think, put that viagra away you were about to pop and realise it is an opinion (an a totally naff one at that).

Leither,
Your myopic rantings miss the point, completely. Irrespective of the wonderful (and apparently, impossible) Oxford example that Peter stumbled onto & irrespective of the pile of tripe you keep trundling out, the fundamental point of the article is to draw attention to potential tourists, to the UK. As was the original article on NZ.
Unless you are Stephen Jones or Eddie Butler in disguise, I doubt you get the same opportunity to travel the world & make these comparisons that he does. Each & every Lions & England tour, you will see his columns. These opinions are from over 30 years of travelling the world & then coming back to the UK & not unlike the Lonely Planet, if it hadn't been researched & checked, he wouldn't have written it. Or, is he & the Lonely Planet wrong & some miserable, bitter & twisted twat living in deepest Edinburgh, correct?
I'll take my chances with Peter, thanks.

Buzzy Bee, it's called calling a spade a spade. You still haven't helped me understand why you have this unhealthy & ongoing fascination with NZ, though you deride NZ at almost any opportunity. Are you still looking for evidence which can put your insecure mind at rest & validate your move to Aus, & that you made the right decision, while all of us poor mugs living here in poor old NZ, make do with crap housing, unsustainable COL , horrible weather & a culture- which is not a patch on Melbourne.
Tell me Buzzy, I'm still waiting.

Potential tourists pay Council Tax? If not, why did he bring it up and why did you regurgitate it as if it was fact

Obviously it wasn't researched or he wouldn't express anecdotal evidence that is evidently flawed

On the contrary. I am well contended with my lot living in one of the best cities in Europe. I assume you base this comment on the fact you were a bitter, twisted loser who couldn't handle it in this country and have discovered that despite moving half way round the world you are still a bitter and twisted loser.
I'll take my chances with Peter, thanks.

You are correct. I will take the advice of my old gran never to argue with a half-wit. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I will leave Howick with his Peter Bills article and on-line Daily Mail.

Buzzy, well- end the unhealthy fascination you have with running down NZ & we'll be just fine. You no longer live here, which we all know only too well, so get on with life in that utopia you call Oz, equipped with easy entry on your NZ passport- while we all cope with this horrible existence in NZ.
Leither, it's contented. I contended that you were talking out of your chocolate starfish.

You're right, it's not up to me. If it was, your tired & repetitive tripe would have been given the boot a long time ago. There is nothing new or informative in what you say.
....and then you go & contradict yourself. Do yourself a favour & have another look at all your 'happy clappy' Aussie postings, espousing the various merits of wonderful Melbourne. Ever considered the fact that Melbourne is actually a very expensive place to purchase real estate in? Ever considered that the weather in Melbourne in July, makes Inverness's climate look like Honululu. Ever considered the fact that more Australian's than ever are now living below the poverty line. Melbourne & culture? Funny that, the only people who have ever told me that have been, er....people from Melbourne.
You have about as much balance as Donald Rumsfeld.
Buzzy Bee- how about Bumble Bee?
