Palmerston North's not that bad!
I visited Palmerston North on the way home from Rotorua. It wasn't the urban hellhole that I'd been led to believe...
OK it's flat and it's rural, but it's a University town and the square in the middle is quite a nice feature in my opinion. I saw people land-yacht racing in one of the parks which was cool.
I can understand why Genesis is so worked up about drivers though. The roads around Palmerston North are long, straight and narrow with occasional bends and an uneven surface - when we drove through the road ahead was distorted by heat haze. Those kind of roads are overtaking and speeding crash sites waiting to happen.

I like the Asian shop on Rangatiki street where they sell the Sarsi. The plaza has killed a lot of the shops on Broadway, they should really make it a limited period free parking area again to rejuvenate retail traffic.
What astonishes me is that a town of that size can support: 3 x McDonalds, 3 x Subways and 2 x Burger kings. Does everyone just buy junk food and go home to watch Masterchef/Jamie Oliver/Ramsey/Lawson on the 'teh telly? Cooking will soon be a lost art only "As seen on TV".

I was headhunted for a job in PN a couple of years ago. Seriously considered it, but eventually turned it down cos of the crap salary and no relocation package. Was offered it again last year, but declined for the same reason
