Otaki.....what's it like??
Hi,
Been looking through rentals and found that properties in Otaki are cheaper than elsewhere in Kapiti.
Guess there must be a reason for this.....any ideas?? Anyone live in Otaki?
Thanks
Lydia

Know it a bit. It has a main area inland and a beach area too with lots of houses. It is a wee bit on the low decile side that will be the reason for the low rent. Stayed a weekend there once at the beach..was pretty good. You pay your money and get your choice. Google 'Otaki' stuff and see what you find. We live about 45 mins away. Very good shops. Nice beach. By contrast Kate knows it very well as she spends much time working in the community there. She loves it (and not just because of the shops!!). Wellington is just 1.5 hrs by road and Waikanae is the next township down which has a glorious beach.

And also because the normal trains to/from Wellington only go as far as Paraparaumu (will be Waikanae early next year).
There's is a train running from Palmerston North to Wellington that stops at Otaki, but it's one direction only - goes to Wellington in the morning stopping at Otaki at about 7am-ish and then returns leaving Wellington at 5:15pm. You're a bit stuck if you're delayed and miss the train in the evening

Traffic through the main thoroughfare can ve a nightmare, especially around bank holidays... days out at the Race Course there though are great...

We live 10 mins sth of Otaki and I can't realy recommend it. It is a generally low decile area with some poor housing. 3 main areas to it. State Highway 1 which is mainly commercial. Road to the beach. Once again mainly commercial but less so. Otaki Beach - which is resedential. Obviously all the 'bits' in between are residential with some great larger houses / lifestyle plots on the edges - so there are some secluded areas to be found. Depends on your budget, work, schooling needs etc.
Personally I'd pay a bit more to be a little further south.

What are you going to do in Otaki? For work?
And what you going to at weekends? Fish? Golf? Run up and down the beach? Its allright for those things, but Welliington is a long way to go for any things that might be on. Who you gonna associate with - there are two gangs to chose from.

Cheers Browner. I wish we could all meet up sometimes... I think we are probably quite alike. Why else do we go on these websites?

Well Otaki is just a bit further to commute which is why it’s cheaper (that said if you had some flexibility in where you worked it might not be such a problem). I like it around them parts (Otaki/Levin/Foxton) and don’t be put off by the street gang rubbish because I never see them when I’m in those parts.
The population of N41 (which is the Otaki/Levin/Foxton electoral district) is actually shrinking by about 1.5% p.a. IRRC so you may have it all to yourself eventually. Seems like a good bet if/when government decentralises its department (something the most developed countries did in the mid 90’s or before) from Wellington as Palmerston North is an obvious candidate for expansion into rural townships. All those government employees will want houses by the sea driving prices way up .
