What spoonguy said. It's dead easy, and most banks in the cities have a migrant banking division who you can talk to and who will sort everything out for you.

We did it by fax and email with Richie of Westpac Migrant Banking in Riccarton, Christchurch and the service has been flawless ever since.

Some banks we found won't do business with you unless you have a visa for New Zealand, but Kiwibank we found didn't care...

We opened one with Kiwibank before we got here. They're very helpful. Once you're here you just have to pop in and let them see your passport/proof of ID and then they'll arrange cheque books, eftpos cards (cash machine/switch type cards) and possibly credit cards and you set up your pin number. My OH did all the leg work but from memory I think he set it up over the internet and faxed or scanned and then emailed ID. Hope this helps

Easy peasy lemon squeezy as my children used to say. You'll have no problems, most banks in UK have affiliated banks in NZ that they deal with.

Have opened one with National Bank of NZ online.

Very easy, and been able to transfer some funds already to it.

I even got a phone call from them to let me know when the transfer had happened which I certainly wouldn't expect from the UK bank.

When we get to NZ, just have to activate it, by presenting them with a passport etc to be able to get our cards, chequebooks etc.

Easy as pie

ANZ actually promotes it on the homepage of their website currently. It specifically says:

Moving to New Zealand
We can help you set up your New Zealand bank accounts before you leave home.

It then goes on to have some quite helpful information. I do know that I find it very easy to transfer money to the UK from my ANZ account online.
